Blue Devils stifle Comets

FALLSBURG - When Roscoe visited Morningside Park to square off against the Comets in a league matchup, nobody was sure what to expect. Both teams were coming off of league victories, and each team brings a different play style to the table. Roscoe’s game plan seemed to work a bit more than Fallsburg’s, and the Blue Devils handed Fallsburg their first league loss 22-3.

Most of the first half was a defensive clinic, with two great defenses refusing to allow their opponents to score. It took Fallsburg until 18.3 seconds remaining in the first half to put any points up: a 13-yard field goal that split the uprights and gave the Comets a 3-0 lead entering the break.

With Roscoe set to receive the second half kickoff, something in the air changed. Roscoe’s offense found its rhythm to the tune of a long drive that took nearly six minutes before being capped off by a touchdown and a 2-point conversion. The Blue Devils took an 8-3 lead, behind the legs of Anthony Teipelke, and never looked back.

Alaniz Ruiz slipped through tackles into the end zone three times in the second half, twice for touchdowns and once on a 2-point conversion. The Roscoe lead extended to 22-3, where it would stay when time expired.

While Roscoe’s offense was starting to make plays and score, their defense continued to suffocate the Fallsburg offense. The Blue Devils forced two fumbles and intercepted a pass in the second half, which was enough to slow Fallsburg’s offense. During their defensive exchanges, Jerimiah Finding intercepted a pass for Fallsburg, and both teams battled until the final whistle.

The Blue Devils are now sitting at 2-2 (2-0), while Fallsburg is in the middle of the pack at 1-3 (1-1). Blue Devils coach, Mike Hill, said, “Fallsburg did a great job in the first half, slowing us down and moving up the field. Their team speed was an issue for us early, but their field goal seemed to fire our guys up before the second half.”
