Bohn family makes bowling history

Posted

This bowling writer has, over my many years of writing about this great sport of bowling, had the opportunity to become friends with many of the professional bowlers, and two of these bowlers have been Leslie and Parker Bohn III.

Although Shirley and I have not visited the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) tour recently, we still have communications with the Bohn family.

The Bohn family is making bowling history as three members of the same family won major tournaments in less than 10 days.

Nearly 3,300 United States Bowling Congress youth members competed at 2022 Junior Gold Championships and Justin Bohn won three matches in the U20 Boys Finals to win the title and earn a spot on the 2023 Junior Team USA.

Six days after this win, Parker Bohn III won his second PBA50 major title of the year in Westland, Michigan. His daughter, Sydney, encouraged her dad to switch to a Brunswick Purple Hammer in qualifying and his scores soared. The ball change powered him to his third title in 2022, putting Parker as the frontrunner in the PBA50 Player of the Year conversation.

Following Parker’s win, two days later, Sydney earned a sixth-place finish in U18 Girls at Junior Gold, which follows up her third-place finish in U15 at last year’s Junior Gold.

Next to take honors was Brandon’s turn in U18 Boys.

The close-knit Bohn bowling family is used to seeing the tall lefty succeed, having won back-to-back Junior Gold, so they were not surprised he became a back-to-back Junior Gold champion. He also earned himself a spot on 2023 Junior Team USA.

Bowling Tip by Mike Luongo

Bowlers, this week we are going to give advice to senior bowlers.

You are never too old to have fun and winning has no age.

Age is not a disadvantage to being able to bowl if you can adjust your game to your personal abilities.

Bowling can be used as a socializing tool and a way of relieving stress.

Most people overlook the therapeutic and psychological benefits of bowling.

Remember, it is important to be comfortable when bowling. If you are wearing special shoes when not bowling, there is no reason to not have the same support when bowling.

Also remember to dress comfortably, and loose-fitting clothes with short sleeves are probably the best choice.

Make sure you choose the proper ball weight by keeping in mind that the ball you used 20 years ago may not work for you anymore. Establish the ball weight that works best for you. Do keep in mind that a ball which is too light can cause your swing to be flat and create poor direction or loss of hitting power.

Proper ball fit and grip is very important and the recommended grip for a senior is the conventional grip and another method of improving the strength of your grip is by drilling an extra hole. This is not unusual, and it helps more than you think.

All seniors should also use wrist supports to strengthen your grip.

As a senior you may want to use a back of knee support just to ensure that you do not suffer from an older ailment.

And very important, stretching exercises will help you to loosen the joints and muscles.
