Liberty offense cools off in second half in non-league loss

LIBERTY – After an intense first half, the contest between Port Jervis and Liberty ended in a lopsided fashion on Wednesday night.

The non-league matchup between the two schools had a little bit of everything, but it was Liberty who fell short as Port Jervis outscored their opponents 34-17 in the second half.

In the first quarter, Liberty’s Cody Ricco netted three treys, scoring nine of the team’s 12 points, but by the end of the first period Port Jervis had a 19-12 lead.

In the second quarter, Liberty would trim that lead down to four, but a 7-0 run in the waning minutes of the half led to a 38-27 lead for Port Jervis at the half.

In the second half, Port Jervis made some adjustments to their defense, and their offense started clicking. A 19-6 third quarter made it 57-33, and they continued to make offense in the fourth quarter on their way to a 72-44 wire-to-wire victory.

“We were in it for a while,” Liberty Coach Matt Robinson said. “We turned it over a lot in the second half and we had a tough time rebounding, so the game got away from us. The kids worked hard and didn’t give up.”

Liberty will have to shake that loss off quickly as they host Chester tonight in a league matchup against the Hambletonians.
