Bowlers are moving on

Posted

With the sudden announcement that Kiamesha Lanes has been sold and the site will become the location of a grocery store, bowlers this week are picking up and cleaning out their bowling equipment lockers and moving on to locations in Port Jervis, Chester and Newburgh.

Former Monday Night Men's league bowlers from Kimesha Lanes met with the owner of Port Jervis Bowl on their last night at Kiamesha Lanes and agreed to shift almost half of their league to Port Jervis, where the league will start their season all over again on October 25.

Sullivan County bowlers were also approached by management at Colonial Lanes in Chester, where a number of bowlers made commitments to bowl in leagues at that location.

Rumors have circulated that there may be plans for the future building of a smaller six to eight lane bowling center within Sullivan County.

The only bowling center presently open in Sullivan County is the Beechwood Lanes, located at the Villa Roma Resort.

A lot of internet chatter and dissatisfaction from some Kiamesha Lanes bowlers is circulating but much of it is not printable.

Long time excellent bowler, Debbie Polin who now lives in South Carolina noted, "very sad news."

Well known bowler and an outstanding contributor that supported youth bowling, Mal Press, who now lives in Florida, pointed out on social media, "it's like the end of an era. I bowled there with the kids as a counselor in a summer camp like 52 years ago, and a few years later while I was a waiter at the Concord."

A number of bowlers made note that a lot of things played a factor in the sale, but that COVID-19 did not help. Being closed for almost a year and leagues not wanting to bowl because of masks and plastic hanging between alleys, yet the owners still having to pay all the bills and a mortgage along with taxes didn't help the situation.

The future of a bowling center in Sullivan County is yet to be determined, but it is a reality that bowlers will find bowling leagues even if if means a little travel time to get to them.

Bowling Tip by Mike Luongo

Bowlers, this week we are going to give advice to senior bowlers.

You are never too old to have fun, and winning has no age.

Age is not a disadvantage to being able to bowl if you can adjust your game to your personal abilities.

Bowling can be used as a socializing and exercise tool and also a way of stress relief. Most people overlook the therapeutic and psychological benefits of bowling.

Remember, it is important to be comfortable when bowling. If you are wearing special shoes when not bowling, there is no reason to not have the same support when bowling.

Also remember to dress comfortably. Loose fitting clothes with short sleeves are probably the best choice.

Make sure you choose the proper ball weight by keeping in mind that the ball you used 20 years ago may not work for you anymore. Establish the ball weight that works best for you, and keep in mind that a ball which is too light can cause your swing to be flat and create poor direction or loss of hitting power.

Proper ball fit and grip is very important, and the recommended grip for a senior is the conventional grip. Another method of improving the strength of your grip is by drilling an extra hole. This is not unusual and it helps more than you think.

All seniors should also use wrist supports to strengthen your grip. As a senior you may want to use a back of knee support just to insure that you do not suffer from an older ailment. Another important note, stretching exercises will help you to loosen the joints and muscles.
