LIBERTY – The Sullivan West Bulldogs boys’ basketball team had a road game against the Liberty RedHawks on Tuesday night.
Both teams came into the matchup with overall records of 1-3. The Bulldogs have a 1-1 record in league games and Liberty has a 0-1 league record.
The RedHawks got off to a fast start, grabbing a 9-0 lead in the opening minutes of the game.
The end of the opening quarter would see Bulldogs get back into the game, going on a 9-2 run to make it 11-9 Liberty.
The RedHawks opened their lead to 17-11 with 5:45 remaining in the second quarter. The Bulldogs would battle back with an 11-5 run to level the score at 22-22 with a minute remaining in the second quarter.
Thanks to tough 2-3 zone defense and timely baskets Sullivan West got back into the back. The score would stay level 24-24 at the end of the first half.
The Bulldogs started the third quarter with a flurry, running their lead up to 34-24 at the 5-minute mark.
The RedHawks would respond after a timeout with their own 13-0 run, grabbing a 37-34 lead with a minute remaining in the quarter. The Bulldogs would sink a three-point basket to once again tie the score 37-37 at the end of the third quarter.
The fourth quarter would remain tight between the two teams following the theme in the third quarter. The Bulldogs would grab the lead 47-46 with 3:29 left to go in the game.
The RedHawks responded with back-to-back buckets and take a 50-47 lead with 2 minutes to go.
On the ensuing possession the visiting Bulldogs would hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 50-50.
The difference in the game would be the visiting Bulldogs clutch free throw shooting by Matt DuBois, who went 2-2 with 43 seconds left and Evan Ebert, who went 1-2 moments later, giving them a 53-50 lead.
The RedHawks had chances to tie and win the game however they would not be able to convert and fall to the Bulldogs 53-30. Sullivan West would improve their record to 2-3 with the victory, and Liberty would drop to 1-4 following the defeat.
