But First, Accountability

So here we are, America. Donald J. Trump, described by his niece Mary as “the world's most dangerous man”, has proven her correct.

He brought our democracy to the place where his faithful followers actually stormed our nation's Capitol, whipped up by his Stop the Steal rally, powered by his insistent lies about being cheated out of this election, and amplified by right-wing commentators.

The domestic terrorist groups that showed up at the rally included QAnon, the Proud Boys, and the Boogaloos who use Trump's lies to fuel insane conspiracy theories.

He has been aided and abetted by his Senate co-conspirators such as the oleaginous Ted Cruz and the malignant opportunist Josh Hawley as well as by members of the House of Representatives Mo Brooks (Ala.), Paul Gosar (Ariz.), and Andy Biggs (Ariz).

The FBI is now reporting that online chatter by the domestic terrorists who attacked our Capitol is off the charts. They have been emboldened by their “success” on January 6, and that strange January 6 video message from Trump during the attack telling them to go home now but reminding them that he loves them.

Wow. Just wow. Washington DC now looks like a combat zone. How much more damage can he cause before the inauguration? It's anyone's guess.

Trump made two disingenuous Teleprompter videos since the attack, saying he wants only peace, yet neither conceding the election nor disavowing any of the lies that led to this insurrection.

I consider those speeches to be like bouquets given by a guilty husband to his battered wife the day after a particularly harsh beating. “I promise, honey, I will never do it again.” The subtext is clear: Don't hold me accountable for my actions.

But on January 13, thank God, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stood up to our nation's biggest bully and he was impeached yet again, the only President to be so disgraced.

The text of the article of impeachment reads in part, “On January 6, 2021, pursuant to the 12th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, the Vice President of the United States, the House of Representatives, and the Senate met at the United States Capitol for a Joint Session of Congress to count the votes of the Electoral College.

“In the months preceding the Joint Session, President Trump repeatedly issued false statements asserting that the Presidential election results were the product of widespread fraud and should not be accepted by the American people or certified by State or Federal officials.

“Shortly before the Joint Session commenced, President Trump addressed a crowd at the Ellipse in Washington, D.C. There, he reiterated false claims that ‘we won this election, and we won it by a landslide.' He also willfully made statements that, in context, encouraged - and foreseeably resulted in - lawless action at the Capitol, such as: ‘if you don't fight like hell you're not going to have a country any more.'

“Thus incited by President Trump, members of the crowd he had addressed, in an attempt to, among other objectives, interfere with the Joint Session's solemn constitutional duty to certify the results of the 2020 Presidential election, unlawfully breached and vandalized the Capitol, injured and killed law enforcement personnel, menaced Members of Congress, the Vice President, and Congressional personnel, and engaged in other violent, deadly, destructive and seditious acts.”

This Article of Impeachment passed the House with 10 Republicans joining all the Democrats. This man, a clear, present, and continuing danger to our nation, must finally be held to account.
