NORWICH -- The Catskill Claws recently took to the trails in Norwich for a race where the team earned three more medals, including the first top finish the team has had.

Sylvan Garrelts earned a first place podium finish in the 7th grade boys' race after completing three laps on the middle school course. Garrelts had a fastest lap time of 19:05 and an overall time of 59:39.64 ahead of Alex Nuzum of Pleasantville who had an overall time of 1:02:25.48. Garrelts' 1st place finish also earned him his leader jersey for being 1st place overall for the season with 1,936 points ahead of Aiden Sloan of R-Cubed NICA with 1,907 points - a big accomplishment.

Also, Claws' Agatha Ryan earned a second place podium finish on the high school course in the sophomore girls' race with a fastest lap time of 22:13 and an overall time after three laps of 1:10:39.70 ahead of Emma O'Shea of the Central New York Composite team who had an overall time of 1:18:27. Ryan was only 49 seconds behind Olivia Guzzo of the Niskayuna/Mohawk Composite team who took first place with an overall time of 1:09:50.70.

Ryan's second place finish earned 490 points for the Claws and also placed her in 2nd place overall for the season so far with 1,925 points ahead of O'Shea with 1,924 points for the season after four races.

Claws' Caitin Walsh earned a third place podium finish in the 7th grade girls on the middle school course, having a fastest lap of 22:38 and an overall time of 46:39.26 ahead of Michelle Paggy of Dave Jordan Racing Juniors who had an overall time of 1:07:03.41. Walsh is currently in 3rd place overall for the season with 1,951 points ahead of Paggy with 1,864 points.

“This was an all new venue for the league, the course was mapped out by the local team on Chenango county property and provided for some interesting riding with undulating terrain and man-made obstacles created by the local trail builders,” said Catskill Claws Head Coach Keith Stephenson. “The most challenging part of the races this weekend was the heat and humidity kids had to cope with.”
