Lady Bulldogs come up short on the road

SEWARD –– When two undefeated teams face off against one another, only one can come away with a win. In Friday afternoon’s marquee matchup, we saw two strong teams compete: The Sullivan West Lady Bulldogs and the Seward Lady Spartans. Both teams entered the league matchup with a 4-0 record, but Seward won the game 3-1 and stayed undefeated.

Sullivan West started the day strong, finding the back of the net first after just 10 minutes into the game. After the initial shot was deflected by Seward’s goalie, Mia Nunnari followed up with a quick strike to the left side of the net for the goal.

The Lady Bulldogs held onto their lead for the next 15 minutes, the two teams battling for field position, until Seward was able to sneak in an equalizer with just over 15 minutes remaining in the first half.

Though the clock was paused with 3:24 remaining in the half, the ladies continued their battle. As time stood still, Seward methodically moved the ball, sneaking a deep shot through the defense that took an awkward bounce up and down a few times before rolling into the goal, just seconds before the halftime whistle.

After halftime, when the match between the two juggernauts continued, the stalemate settled back in. Neither team willingly gave an inch, and the girls fought ferociously throughout the game. As time winded down in the second half, Seward struck for the third and final time of the day, scoring 19:45 minutes into the half.

Sullivan West stayed locked in for the rest of the game, creating scoring opportunities but were just unable to capitalize before the final whistle. The Lady Bulldogs may have gone home with a loss, but they gained valuable experience that they will use throughout the rest of the season.

Sullivan West hosted Eldred yesterday in a non-league matchup, and will be back on the road tomorrow afternoon as they travel to Chester for another league game.
