FALLSBURG – In their first home game of the season the Comets struggled to keep up with the Seward Spartans. With two fast breakaways late in the first half from the opposing team the Spartans had taken a 2-0 lead before heading into the break.
The Comets were able to create more scoring opportunities in the second half but were unable to convert them to points. Both teams committed several fouls during the last 30 minutes of play.
The second half was riddled with injury with the Spartans goalie leaving the game, and an errant ball to the head took Fallsburg’s Paola Deras out for a short time. Both injuries momentarily stopped the clock with just under 15 minutes remaining in the contest.
The visiting Spartans went on to score two additional goals, taking a 4-0 lead over the Comets. This lead was just enough to help the Spartans close out the game with a win on the road. Stepping in as goalie for the Comets was senior and team captain, Marilyn Santos, who made several key saves in the latter minutes. Santos displayed true leadership and teamwork on the field.
The Comets are set to play Sullivan West on Monday, September 8, at 4:30 pm, with homefield advantage in their favor. This will be the second league contest for the Sullivan West Bulldogs this season.
