Offensive surge and stifling defense propel Fallsburg past Onteora

FALLSBURG – Trust the process. The Fallsburg Comets, who have worked hard to rebuild the football program, earned a big shutout victory over Onteora in their first game of the season. Coach Scanna and his dedicated group of assistants have worked hard with the players to get them ready for the season, and if Friday night’s 33-0 shutout victory is any indication, the Comets are going to be a force this year.

The Comets won the game on every front. The offensive line worked in tandem to provide running lanes and a passing pocket to allow the Comets to move up the field. The defensive line stuffed the running lanes and forced Onteora to dig deeper into their playbook to try to muster offense. Senior quarterback Andrew Rein accumulated four total touchdowns, three on the ground and connecting with Isaiah Young on a 16-yard touchdown pass.

Andrew Rein rushed for 100 yards and three touchdowns, while also throwing for 107 yards. Isaiah Young caught four passes for 33 yards, including a 16-yard touchdown as well as a 60-yard punt return for a touchdown.

Special teams is commonly overlooked, but the Comets’ unit was pivotal in the win. Open field tackling on kickoffs, a punt return touchdown by Isaiah Young, and hustling to fill lanes helped to complete the opening weekend shutout.

Fallsburg, who allowed 240 points last season, including a 48-12 opening week loss last season, are flipping the script. They showed that they are capable of scoring and that their defense can make timely stops. Combining the defensive and special teams efforts with Andrew Rein and Isaiah Young’s handful of touchdowns in week one, and you have a team that currently holds first place thanks to point differential.

“All the credit from this win goes to the players,” Coach Dom Scanna said. “The team has been in the weight room since February. They challenge themselves to be better, and they are a dedicated group of young men and women.”

The Comets will have their bye week next week, but will be back in week three to face off against Livingston Manor/Roscoe.
