Fallsburg earns league win behind big offense

ELDRED - Getting a win on the road is never an easy task, but Fallsburg’s strong offensive performance helped them do just that. The Comets had an advantage in both depth and size in the league matchup, but Eldred fought hard up until the end in the 31-20 game.

Neither team started out the way they wanted to, with Fallsburg fumbling the second play from scrimmage and Eldred turning the ball right back over on downs. After the two teams got their early miscues out of the way, they both got down to business, duking it out between the white lines for the entire night.

On the Fallsburg drive after the Eldred turnover, a high snap floated over the quarterback and the Comets fell on it for a loss of 15 yards. Immediately after, the Comets scored on a long 60-yard run to take a 6-0 lead. They failed the 2-point conversion.

Fallsburg followed up their big run with a second, scoring on a 55-yard sprint to the endzone. This time, the 2-point conversion would succeed, and the Comets were up 14-0 before the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Comets continued where they left off, with #81 scoring a receiving touchdown and kicking the extra point to expand the lead to 21-0.

It took Eldred until there was 3:46 left in the first half, but they got on the board and cut the lead down by a score, 21-6. However, Fallsburg was able to get into field goal range and split the uprights to move the score to 24-6 at the half.

In the first drive of the second half, Eldred needed only a few plays to run the length of the field and score their second touchdown of the evening. Their 2-point conversion attempt came up about half a yard short, and Fallsburg was still in control, leading 24-12.

Eldred’s defense came up huge in the 3rd quarter, earning a huge defensive stop deep in their own territory, but they turned the ball back over to the Comets on the Fallsburg 40-yard line. A 64-yard rushing touchdown and extra point by Fallsburg increased their lead, 31-12 near the end of the 3rd quarter.

The fourth quarter was mostly quiet, until the Yellowjackets began to drive in the final five minutes. They would not be denied from the endzone, moving the chains on a big fourth down pass and then running in for the score. The 2-point conversion proved successful, but Eldred ran out of time to mount a comeback and Fallsburg went home with a 31-20 win.

“Credit to Fallsburg, they had a good game plan and they executed it well tonight,” Eldred coach … said. “Football is a learning process and that’s why we practice.”

On the other side of the field, Coach Dominic Scanna had this to say. “This was a big win for our guys, and they deserve the credit. Hopefully this win will be one of many that we can string together.”
