Roscoe rebounds from Eldred loss with two league wins

ROSCOE – The Class D schools were busy this week, with Roscoe, Livingston Manor and Eldred all squaring off in division matchups. Eldred won their league game against Roscoe on Tuesday, but lost a non-league clash with Tri-Valley on Friday.

Roscoe recovered from their loss to Eldred with wins against Livingston Manor and Tuxedo. A much-improved Livingston Manor team defended their home court against the Blue Devils until the fourth quarter, but ultimately fell short.

Yellowjackets sting Blue Devils in first meeting

Roscoe and Eldred faced off for the first time this year on Tuesday, and the match lived up to the hype as the two schools are trying to keep pace with Chapel Field at the top of the division.

The first quarter was an exchange of scoring runs, 7-2 by Eldred to open the game and 8-3 by Roscoe to end the quarter at 10 apiece.

Eldred outscored Roscoe 16-10 in the second quarter, making the easy shots that the Blue Devils were struggling to convert on. The 26-20 lead at halftime would be short lived, however.

In the third, Anthony Teipelke briefly took over the game, scoring nine straight points to catch Eldred and tie the game at 31. The Blue Devils scored 13 points in the quarter, all of them by Teipelke. After Roscoe tied it, Eldred ended the quarter on a 9-2 run to increase their lead to seven going into the final quarter.

The Yellowjackets kept their opponents at bay throughout the second half, answering each Blue Devils’ run with a run of their own. Thanks in large part to freshman guard Elijah Gonzalez, who scored 20 points for Eldred. By the final whistle, the Yellowjackets had completed a 54-42 victory on the road.

“Elijah Gonzalez stepped up tonight. This was the best game I’ve seen this team play. We knew we were in for a battle, hats off to the Roscoe team as well,” Eldred Coach Bill Furler said after the win.

The Tri-Valley Bears, who have been impressive at home this season, defeated Eldred 49-28 on Friday in a non-league matchup.

Roscoe fends off Livingston Manor bid for first league win

Roscoe had to shake off the loss to Eldred quickly, as they traveled to Livingston Manor to take on the Wildcats on Wednesday night.

After his 27-point effort against Eldred, Anthony Teipelke spent most of the first half on the bench in foul trouble after picking up two in the first quarter and a third in the opening minutes of the second.

Without one of their main pieces on both sides of the floor, the Blue Devils had to play a much different game. The Wildcats trailed 11-6 at the end of the first quarter before outscoring Roscoe 15-10 to tie it at 21 by halftime.

Both teams exchanged runs in the third quarter, with the Wildcats outscoring the Blue Devils 14-11 to take a 35-32 lead into the fourth quarter.

Roscoe found their stride in the fourth, and thanks to some late turnovers by Livingston Manor, went on a 16-6 run to take the lead and the win.

Six different players reached double digits in the game. Dan Tolbert (12) and Logan Park (11) for Livingston Manor, and Anthony Teipelke (12), Anthony Zamenick (12), Aiden Johnston (10) and Zach Schwartz (10) for Roscoe.

“We gave them a run for their money tonight,” Livingston Manor Coach Charlie Hicks said after the game. “Our inexperience shot us in the foot down the stretch, but credit to the Roscoe guards. They clamped down in crunch time.”

“Livingston Manor is a greatly improved team,” Roscoe Coach Mike Hill said. “We had trouble finding a flow tonight, but a big fourth quarter helped seal the deal.”

Roscoe ends the week with statement win

The Blue Devils were back at home on Friday to take on the Tuxedo Tornadoes. Despite missing a handful of layups in the first half, the Blue Devils were able to convert on enough possessions to take a four-point lead after the first and increase it to 12 by halftime.

Leading 28-16 at halftime on senior night gave the Blue Devils energy in the second half. The energized squad nearly doubled their score in the second half, with almost every player on the roster getting points in the win.

The Blue Devils took home a 53-36 win, giving them a third league victory.

Anthony Teipelke scored 23 points in the win, with Aiden Johnston adding 11 and Anthony Zamenick adding nine.

“The best part of the game tonight was that everyone got a chance to play and we were able to celebrate our three seniors,” Coach Hill said. “Tuxedo is young, but they have a lot of potential and they showed it today.”
