Dealing with the virus

Posted

When I started this column yesterday I wrote that so far my family and I are only experiencing inconvenience and minor disappointments.

Since then I learned that my grandson's girlfriend has the corona virus and that John may have it too as he has numbness in his hands which is a symptom. He is awaiting his test results now. Since they are both in their 30's and have no serious health issues I feel that they will recover.

They have been advised by a family friend who has had the virus to drink plenty of liquids.

I've been fortunate to have my son doing my food shopping and picking up things at the pharmacy for me. When the weather was still nice we ate out at some restaurants in the area that had outdoor seating, such as The Cabin on the road between Callicoon Center and Jeffersonville and the Callicoon Brewing Co. I don't feel safe eating inside yet.

The Callicoon Center band concerts were sorely missed by me. My dad started that band and there's a banner hanging on the stand with his name on it. This is the first summer in 86 years that there weren't any concerts.

This time of year I usually go to Sarasota, Florida for two weeks so I miss doing that. My granddaughter and her mother have been trying to get to her sister's in Los Angeles to see her and her new baby.

They had planned to go for Christmas and stay until the baby was born but something came up and they couldn't go. Now because of the virus they haven't been able to fly. All of those things are such trivia compared to the loss and heartbreak that so many people have experienced.

I know that I will eventually be able to come out of hibernation and get to interact with family and friends once again.

On the lighter side, I always look for sales and I bought so much toilet paper before the pandemic began that I haven't had to buy any and still haven't used it all.
