Decisions, decisions

I hate it when I have to make a decision. I handle things that happen to me that are not pleasant pretty well but not if it’s the result of a wrong decision I’ve made or that I think I’ve made.

On Monday I had cataract surgery and I chose to have it done by laser. Regular cataract surgery is covered by insurance but laser is not. It’s very expensive so I was prepared to lose an arm and a leg but not for everything. Yesterday (Tuesday) I went for a post-op examination at the doctor’s office.

He was disappointed that I couldn’t see better. I have a stigmatism that I’ve had for many years, and I still have it so tomorrow I go for a procedure that hopefully will correct that. I have a slight ache in the eye when I move it in a certain direction. I wasn’t prepared for that but, if I keep it focused straight ahead, it goes away and will improve. I have been busy trying to kill mosquitoes that aren’t there. That I know is due to floaters that will eventually subside.

My kids were too involved in helping me decide whether to have the surgery at all and then where and when to have it. My daughter gave me some advice but then was willing to back off after I had made the decision. My son, however, continued to try to get me to hold off for a few months and kept badgering me to see it his way. In the end he was helpful by putting drops in my eye and driving me to the facility and back.

It all reminded me of times I helped others make a decision. A friend of mine who wasn’t getting along with her husband was trying to make up her mind whether to go on a trip with him that he wanted them both to go on. She said that if she went, he would think that everything he was doing was okay. All I said was that it didn’t work that way and I thought she should go. When they got back she chewed me out unmercifully because she had taken my advice and had a miserable time.

A friend of mine who is refusing to get vaccinated, hasn’t asked for my advice but does discuss her decision with me. She told me about her minister and some friends and cousins of hers that weren’t vaccinated and got the virus. I said to her with an incredulous tone “And you’re still not convinced that you should get vaccinated?”

I strongly believe she should make a different decision but even after getting Covid herself and either giving it to her elderly parents or getting it from them she still feels she is making the right decision. Fortunately her parents recovered, but I will continue to try to convince her to make the decision to get vaccinated even though she hasn’t asked for my advice.
