Delaware Highlands Conservancy holds Earth Day crafting event

Posted

BEACH LAKE, PA – Kicking off Earth Day weekend was the Delaware Highlands Conservancy, which held a crafting event at their headquarters, the Van Scott Nature Reserve in Beach Lake, Pennsylvania, last Friday.

Rachel Morrow, Education and Volunteer Coordinator for the Conservancy, set up the crafting event with a few tables, each with their own unique craft for attendees to complete. The crafts were nature-based and had a conservation theme.

One of the crafts was making pine cone bird feeders, using peanut butter to stick bird seed to the pine cones.

Morrow said that since she started working at the Conservancy in October, she has looked to start working on a handful of nature conservancy projects. This was the first drop-in crafting event she has done.

The conservancy has been at the Van Scott Nature Reserve since 2020, when the 144 acres of land was donated to them by the Van Scott family. It is the first permanent home for the conservancy and has helped them to establish a center for conservation education.

Over three miles of the land consists of publicly accessible walking trails that go through the woods and wildflower meadows. You also get a view of the Catskills from one of the trails.

There will be more events at the Van Scott Nature Reserve through the spring and summer, including “Black Bears of the Woods” on May 10 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. and “Fish of the Delaware River” on June 24 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The conservancy will also be expanding overtime, developing their other farm structures into new and enhanced educational programs. One of their garages, located right by the main office, will be developed into a sustainable and accessible environmental education center.
