Local teams take to the links for a division encounter

CALLICOON – When teams will be able to get on the greens in Sullivan County is always a guessing game with the unpredictable weather of early spring. As such much of the local teams played their first matches of the season in Orange or Ulster County, often against much larger schools that featured a number of very talented golfers.

So it was with smiles and camaraderie among the girls from Monticello, Sullivan West, Tri-Valley, Liberty and Fallsburg that a divisional invitational got underway on the lovely, but still quite wet, confines of the Villa Roma golf course.

There were only 14 golfers present from the combined quintet of schools. Sullivan West girls golf coach Pat Donovan welcomed them all, gave them the lowdown on what they might encounter in certain places on the course and what they could do with certain obstructions etc. They then took off in three sets of four and one set of two to test their skills in this as yet early part of the season which is already one of the shortest of the spring sports ledger.

The top golfer was Tri-Valley’s Kaylee Poppo who reached the state tournament a year ago. Poppo registered the best score of the day with an efficient 44. She was followed by Monticello’s Harley Taylor (52) and Liberty’s Alli Dworetsky (53). Monticello won the team encounter with a combined score of 164.

Team scores: Monticello (M) 164; Liberty (Lib) 183; Sullivan West (SW) 192; Tri-Valley (TV) 210; Fallsburg (F) 210. Did not play: Livingston Manor

Team records to date are as follows: Monticello 6-23 (5-0), Liberty 4-9 (4-1), Tri-Valley 2-9 (0-5), Sullivan West 0-5 (0-5) and Fallsburg 0-7 (0-5

Leaders: Kaylee Poppo (TV) 44; Harley Taylor (M) 52; Alli Sworetsky (Lib) 53; Lucia Kennedy (SW) 56; Abby Morse (M) 56; Hailey Kaplan (M) 56; Summer Schmidt (Lib) 61; Ryan McElroy (SW) 66; Sophia Jacobs (F) 66
