Doreen Ann Kraus, a longtime resident of Narrowsburg, passed away on Friday, May 2, 2025, at Wayne Memorial Hospital with her family by her side. She was 80 years old.

Doreen was the daughter of the late James and Moira (Turley) Prendergast. She was born September 26, 1944, in Brooklyn, NY.

Doreen always put others before herself. She worked for Peck’s Market in Narrowsburg, NY where she was known for giving slices of cheese to young passersby. She was the hostess of the Main Street Café. She developed many cherished lifelong friendships at both places and touched countless lives.

She was a member of St. Francis Xavier RC Church, Narrowsburg, NY.  She was an active member of the Tusten Settlement Association and volunteered with the Tusten Ambulance Services for many years but also provided medical care to many of the neighborhood children.

A family statement reads: Doreen was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.  She married the love of her life, Ed, and they shared so much together.  She was so proud of her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved Christmas with her family and also enjoyed warm mornings drinking coffee on her porch saying hello to everyone who went by. She was a meticulous housekeeper and like her husband, took great pride in their home. Her home was always open to the many children who played on the playground behind their house, and they usually left with an ice cream or an ice pop.

Doreen is predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Edward M. Kraus, who passed away May 28, 2024.  She is also predeceased by her sisters, Patricia Prendergast and Moira Hankins, and brothers, Jimmy and Denis Prendergast.  She is survived by her three children: Cindy Odell and her husband Chip of Honesdale, PA, Susan Kraus Jones of Binghamton, NY, Douglas Kraus and Rachel Cudmore of Yellowstone, Wyoming; grandchildren: Brittany Weist and her husband Tyler, Lauren Odell,  Harold Jones V and Hannah Elliott, Morgan Jones, Megann Jones and Brian Schuldt; and great-grandchildren Levi Weist and Olivia Jones; sister, Eileen Falk; brother, Tom Prendergast; a sister-in-law, Monica Kraus; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial visitation will be held on Thursday, May 8, 2025 from 4pm to 7pm at the Harrison Rasmussen Funeral Home, 3412 SR97, Barryville, NY 12719, 845-557-8010.

A memorial mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, May 9, 2025 at 10:00am at St. Francis Xavier RC Church, 151 Bridge St., Narrowsburg, NY 12764.  Burial will follow in St. Francis Cemetery, Narrowsburg, NY.  Father Wenceslaus Rodrigues will officiate.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and hospice staff of Wayne Memorial Hospital for the wonderful care she received. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Doreen to Tusten Volunteer Ambulance Services, St. Francis Xavier RC Church, or the Western Sullivan Public Library – Tusten-Cochecton Branch.

Arrangements are in the care of the Harrison Rasmussen Funeral Home, 3412 Sr 97, Barryville, NY 12719  (845)-557-8010.
