ELDRED –The Eldred Yellowjackets hosted the Tuxedo Tornados for their first boys basketball game after returning from the holiday break this past Friday night.
It was a good matchup with both teams coming to play defensively and offensively.
But Eldred was just too dominant on both ends of the court and secured the 64-27 win over Tuxedo.
Coach Bill Furler said, “We had great team defense tonight. We came into it knowing we had to put the pressure on them. Our size helped us a lot tonight. We have a big game with Chester on Monday so this was a good warm up for us. Great all around game by our guys and I’m proud of them.”
Tuxedo opened the game with an early layup from the paint followed by sinking an open 3 to set the tone. But Eldred’s Trai Kaufmann was able to stop their early momentum by getting an ‘and one’ floater to go and sinking the extra foul shot to pull Eldred back to 3-5 early in the first quarter.
Halfway through the quarter, the Yellowjackets’ James Deyermond was able to get an ‘and one’ worth 3 points of his own to take the lead for Eldred for the first time in the game.
Kaufmann and Deyermond then had multiple consecutive blocks and steals that rattled Tuxedo and allowed Eldred’s offense to cement a 17-5 lead to end the quarter.
At the very start of the second quarter Eldred scored twice to bring the score to 21-5 in their favor. By the halfway point the Yellowjackets held the Tornados to just one basket and Eldred nearly doubled their score.
At halftime Eldred was up 36-13 over Tuxedo with Tuxedo only scoring 3 times throughout the whole quarter.
The third quarter was a bit slower than the first two with Eldred only scoring twice and Tuxedo scoring once by the 4-minute mark.
Eldred was able to hold them to just five points throughout the quarter to make it 50-18 going into the final quarter.
With Eldred up by more than 30 points it was all but over starting the 4th quarter. However the crowd still went wild when Trai Kaufmann slammed a dunk down in the first 20 seconds.
Eldred continued to widen their lead on offensive and get big stops on defense throughout the quarter. Kaufmann had another massive dunk to put Eldred up 60-22 with about 3 minutes left in the game. Eldred finished strong getting a 64-27 win over the Tuxedo Tornados on their home court.
