Bethel
To the editor:
A few years ago I wrote a column entitled "Every Rose has its Thorn." I chose that title because it was my favorite song that Alan Sorensen performed when he appeared at some of the 'open mics' or Bethel Lakeside Music. Since I was always requesting he play it, I knew he would know exactly who the column was about. The point I was trying to make was the inherent conflict of interest he would face being the Orange County Planning Commissioner and a Legislator in Sullivan County. It was predictable that he would have to recuse himself from some vote. It happened to be on the Bed Tax Committee, though it should have occurred before. Him not wanting to give the appearance of impropriety was a bit disingenuous but at least he recused himself. And while I've been extremely disappointed in and critical of Mr. Sorensen for supporting the Party over County, I've never questioned his character or integrity. I cannot say the same for the Chair of the Legislature, Rob Doherty. This is a dishonest person who tries to bully people who disagree with him. Trying to intimidate Ira Steingart shows the kind of person he is. Integrity, class and character are intangibles. When you get to know a person you KNOW if these qualities are part of their make-up. It is unfortunate and discouraging that the traits possessed by the political leader of Sullivan County, Mr. Doherty, are not only being rewarded in the political arena but in society in general.
