FORESTBURGH — On Thursday, May 18 at approximately 2:47 p.m., a brush fire broke out at 1589 Plank Rd near the Town of Forestburgh and Thompson line.
Monticello Fire Department arrived on scene, and it was determined the fire was in the Forestburgh Fire District. Several fire departments responded to mutual aid requests from the Monticello Fire Department. Forestburgh, Rock Hill, Kauneonga Lake and Swan Lake Fire Departments all arrived on scene with tankers.
Arriving on scene with brush trucks and brush equipment were Rock Hill, White Lake and Sparrowbush Fire Departments. Wurtsboro Fire Department was also on standby on the scene with their brush equipment. Kauneonga Lake Fire Department also brought a Utility Terrain vehicle (UTV) on scene, as well Hurleyville and Fallsburg/Woodridge Fire Departments.
Liberty Fire Department responded to a mutual aid request at 3:15 p.m. They set up a portable pump lakeside for water supply.
According to White Lake Fire Department, “Firefighters faced heavy fire conditions with heavy laying timber in a rough terrain down to Swinging Bridge reservoir.”
All fire crews worked extensively to extinguish the flames, which NYS Forest Rangers on scene estimated burned through 9.5 acres. The firefighters were on scene for about five hours and all fire departments returned to service by approximately 8 p.m.
