Four county athletes set to compete at IT States

NEW YORK — Of the Indoor Track athletes that made their way through Sectionals and onto the State Qualifiers, four succeeded in earning a place among the State Championship competitors.

Two Monticello runners and two from Tri-Valley will be competing for state glory in their respective events.

Gabriella Almonte placed second in the 55 meter dash, qualifying for States with the 33rd fastest time in NYS this year, finishing in 7.37 seconds.

Monticello’s Tyrese Shaw placed 4th in the 300 meter dash and qualified for the Section 9 relay team. While not qualifying for the 300m, he earned a spot to compete with other top runners from all of Section 9 in the relay.

From Tri-Valley, the Furman siblings each punched their tickets to States. Anna Furman placed third in the 3000m with a time of 10:27.48. Anna is the third fastest ranked freshman in New York State and the sixth fastest freshman in the country.

Van Furman won the 3200m with a scorching time of 9:15.15. The time was the third fastest in NYS public schools this year, and the seventh fastest junior time in the country this year. Van’s time is the second fastest in Tri-Valley history and broke the TV junior class record.

Kendall McGregor, who did not qualify for states, bettered her TV school record in the 55 meter hurdles to 8.72 (from 8.74).

Due to winter weather, Indoor Track athletes, including the four that qualified for the State meet, will have one final tune up before spring. Tonight at West Point, student-athletes will compete for Divisionals, which are typically held before Sectionals but were postponed due to weather.

The meet is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and will allow runners, jumpers and throwers a chance to compete for division titles.
