Galligan takes helm at SUNY Sullivan

LOCH SHELDRAKE – Dr. Ellen Galligan is going back to school – not as a student or teacher – but rather the Officer in Charge at SUNY Sullivan.

The appointment of Dr. Galligan was made during the SUNY Sullivan board of trustees meeting on Monday evening.

“I am on a whirlwind [tour of all the departments],” Dr. Galligan said Wednesday afternoon, her second day on the new job.

Dr. Galligan, who lives in Forestburgh, spent 22 years with the college – from 1989 through 2010 – in a variety of positions, including Vice President for Academic Affairs and Student Services and Dean of Workforce Development.

“There were a lot of wonderful people when I left, and many of them are still here, in positions with greater responsibility,” Dr. Galligan said.

The world of higher education also brings with it many acronyms and terminology unique to the world of education.

And while Dr. Galligan had all that down pat during her past career, she said, “I am walking around with my composition notebook, learning while I go,” she said. “There are many new acronymns, I assure you.”

Coincidentally, Dr. Galligan was recently appointed to the Board of Trustees at SUNY Sullivan on February 16 by Gov. Kathy Hochul. Her term expires in 2027.

As her first official duty as Officer in Charge, Dr. Galligan will be attending this Saturday’s SUNY Sullivan graduation at the Paul Gerry Fieldhouse.

“I will be marching with the administration and board at commencement,” she said. “It is the 59th annual commencement for the college and I will also be awarding the diplomas.”

When she was appointed to the board of trustees, Dr. Galligan gave a glimpse into her passion for learning.

“I began my studies at a community college and believe in its mission to provide opportunity for students to achieve their educational goals,” she said.

“I thoroughly enjoyed working with the students, faculty, and staff at SUNY Sullivan, and I look forward to serving the college in this role,” she said.

Dr. Galligan will be leading the college in the absence of Jay Quaintance, who was President of SUNY Sullivan and has been on Family Medical Leave for the past two months.
