LOCH SHELDRAKE -- The SUNY Sullivan men's basketball team won the 2020 East District A & B Championship Sunday afternoon and are going dancing for the first time ever at the Division II level, as they earned a trip to Nationals which will be held at the Mary Miller Center in Danville, Ill. from March 17-21.

Over this past weekend (March 7-8) at the NJCAA Division II East District Championship Tournament hosted by SUNY Sullivan, the Generals, on Saturday, edged Erie CC 78-72 to win the A & B semifinal and Sunday had another close game in their win for the championship over the New Jersey Essex Wolverines 76-70. With the win the Generals became the East District A champions.

It is not yet known where this will seat the Generals at Nationals but winning both the Region and East District championships should produce a favorable seeding.

This past weekend's victories gave every indication that the Generals have fight and a lot of grit in them which will be important in the National championship games.

In Saturday's win over Erie, SUNY Sullivan trailed at halftime 36-27 but with a stiffer second half defense and a faster paced offense, the Generals outscored Erie 51-36 securing the six-point 78-72 victory.

Sunday's dramatic win again put the Generals down 39-36 at halftime and a duplication of good defense and drilling the nets when it counted saw SUNY Sullivan outscore the Wolverines 40-31 in the second half clinching the District A & B East District Championship by six points, 76-70.

Generals freshman forward Jordan Drain went to the foul line with 15.8 seconds on the clock and sank two free throws to seal the win.

Leading the offensive attack for the Generals Saturday was sophomore guard Jasiah Lewis with 33 points off nine two-pointers and five treys. Freshmen guard Jalen Reneau hit for 19 points off four deuces and seven foul shots. Sophomore guard Kendall Robinson scored 10 points off four two-pointers and 2 foul shots while sophmore forward Khayri Dawson hit for 10 points off five deuces.

Scoring honors for the Erie Kats went to sophomore guard Ladji Fofana with 34 points off 10 two pointers, two treys and eight free throws.

In Sunday's championship game freshman forward Jordan Drain led the Generals scoring attack with 25 points off seven two pointers, one trey and eight foul shots. Sophomore guard Darius Lee scored 22 points off nine deuces, one trey and one foul shot.

For the Essex Wolverines sophomore guard Etnik Peci swished the nets for 30 points off nine two pointers, three treys and three foul shots.

Women's Basketball

The Lady Generals competed in the same tournament as the men over the weekend, but the women's tourney was held in New Jersey.

Following two wins, the Lady Generals also secured a trip to Nationals, as well as winning their district.

The NJCAA Division II Women's Basketball Tournament takes place March 17-21 in Port Huron, Michigan.

Best of luck to both SUNY Sullivan basketball teams on their quests for national titles.
