T-V boys/girls tops in Div. II; Adam Furman breaks 33-year-old record

GRAHAMSVILLE – Finally, after all the rain this spring, the sun came out in all its glory. Runners, jumpers and throwers from 14 schools who have been soaked by the rain at meet after meet, evinced their joy and energy at this year’s Tri-Valley Invitational with some outstanding results. By far the greatest of these was put forth by Tri-Valley senior Adam Furman who broke Kristian Agnew’s 1990 record in the 1600 of 4:16.4 with a blistering time of 4:13.43, the fastest time among NYS high school boys this season in the event.

At the Iron Dukes Relays in Marlboro last week, Furman turned in a time of 4:20.43 and told his dad/coach Chip Furman he didn’t think he could run any faster. Chip disagreed. After all it was a miserable night weatherwise.

So, Furman set out once again to try and break Agnew’s milestone and he did it in glorious fashion.

“It feels great. I wanted to get that record so bad and I did,” said the West-Point bound phenom.

Furman now sets his sight on Agnew’s 3200 record of 9:15.94. Furman’s fastest time yet is 9:19.85 but at his upcoming participation in the Loucks Games, Furman will try to make history again.  There were superb performances all day beginning with a 3000-steeplechase win by Sullivan West’s Landon Volpe who even eclipsed Pine Bush’s Jacob Crawley the Division I leader with a brilliant strategy and late race kick.

Schools with under 400 enrollments were competing as Division II while the larger schools were scored as Division I. The state meet is scored in DI and DII as well though then the cut off will be 600 and below for DI.

In the girls 2000 steeplechase, Fallsburg’s Joslyn Odell-Schreier captured first overall with a time of 8:34.46 setting a new school record in the event. She forged ahead of Wallkill’s Ruth Weinman (D1) in the last 50 meters. Fallsburg’s team effort was extremely noteworthy. The boys finished second in D2 (fourth overall) and the girls finished second in D2 and third overall. In a meet of this magnitude, it is impractical to mention the numerous fine achievements on display. Countless contenders recorded PR’s and a number of school records were broken as well.
