Grandma’s Diary, March 1913, Part II

Posted

Continued excerpts from my grandmother’s diary when she was sixteen. Her name was Lina. She attended high school and worked in the family bakery located in Times Square. They lived above the bakery. Siblings Hattie, Mary, Helen, Joe and Tillie are mentioned.

March 16th

Hattie and I had a date to go to SoHo, but it rained hard yesterday and Hattie thought it would be too muddy so the date was broken, and I’m stuck inside as usual.

March 17th

St. Patrick’s Day today. The beginning of the day was fine, but towards noon it snowed so hard it was a regular blizzard. I finished the pillow-top I was embroidering. It looks quite nice.

March 18th

Dr. Freidman’s cure is magic. All that were treated are cured and those that were pretty far gone are much better. [Dr. Freidman, a Berlin doctor, took NYC by storm by developing a vaccine using turtle serum].

March 19th

The people across the street have a canary and you ought to hear the little thing sing when they hang it out the window. It’s so happy. I wonder if people are ever so happy. Perhaps they are, but only for a short time, I suppose.

March 20th

It’s a relief to spend a little of time writing in you, dear book. It’s like taking a weight off your mind. I helped Tillie wrap the small change up tonight and by the time I got to bed, it was half past eleven.

March 21st

Today being Good Friday, we sold an awful lot of Hot Cross Buns. I have to fill the jelly donuts and help carry the orders tonight.

March 22nd

Mama, Hattie, and Joe went to the Odeon Theater this evening and they came home about 9:15. They were so satisfied with the show, that I got my coat and hat on (so did Helen) and we raced down there. We just saw 2 ½ acts and two motion pictures when the show closed and we went home disappointed. Fred Meisnest hung around so long again that it was almost 3am when we went to bed. That fellow hangs around so long. He imagines he can get one of us for a girl.

March 23rd

Today is Easter Sunday. Such a cold day, too. Mary and Tillie went to the Amsterdam. I could have gone, too, but I didn’t. In the first place, I thought I’d look out of place with my winter duds on. Everybody has light summery clothes and such styles!

March 24th

Went to the Odeon. It was fine, especially the sketch called The Underworld or the Turn of the Card. Amongst the prizes which were given out was a rug and two live rabbits.

March 26th

While sweeping the floor, I found a dollar. This same day, Ma lost a dollar while shopping. It seemed as if it came back to us. I gave it to Mama in place of the lost one.

March 27th

Our trial against Conrad really did come off at last. Our lawyer said we could fine Conrad $100 and if he wasn’t able to pay he’d be imprisoned a day for each dollar.

March 28th

Got up early, washed the floor, washed the windows, packed the bread and the orders, filled the jelly doughnuts, carried the orders and last, but not least, went to the movies with Hattie. Came home, played on the organ until five minutes to eleven. I think I’ve been going out too much.

March 30th

Had a scrap with Tillie again and now we’re not speaking again. I suppose it’s my fault we can’t get along. We’re of two different natures, and what one takes to heart, the other don’t, etc. etc.

March 31st

I never was so anxious to get a new hat as I am now. They’re awfully cute this year, so nifty. I wish I’d never had that scrap with Tillie. It’s so funny or rather mean to be working in the same place with her and not talk to her.

To be continued…
