Haverstraw man sentenced for sexual assault

SULLIVAN COUNTY — Sullivan County DA Meagan Galligan announced that Jose Gomez, 40, of Haverstraw, was sentenced by Sullivan County Court Judge E. Danielle Jose-Decker to 20 years in prison plus 15 years of post-release supervision upon his convictions for Criminal Sexual Act in the First Degree and Assault in the Second Degree. A Sullivan County Grand Jury indicted Gomez in 2019, following a victim’s disclosure that she and Gomez, who had previously been romantic partners, traveled to Liberty in 2017, where Gomez assaulted and sexually abused her. A jury convicted Gomez following a four-day trial conducted last November, at which numerous witnesses, including the victim, testified. Following delays resulting from motions filed by the defense, Judge Jose-Decker imposed the sentence on Friday, November 4, 2022. The Court additionally issued a permanent Order of Protection foreclosing Gomez from having any contact with the victim.

Galligan said, “This defendant’s actions inflicted a lifetime of trauma on his victim, who bravely testified at trial. My Office will continue to stand with her as she perseveres.” Galligan thanked the New York State Police and Clarkstown Police Department for their work on the case, as well as Victim Advocates Kimberly Bryden and Candice Ozolins.

Gomez continues to be detained at the Sullivan County Jail awaiting transport to the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.
