Helen A. (‘Nana') Stuart, age 89, of Jupiter FL, formerly of Liberty NY, a retired
nurse and hospital administrator, died peacefully, Friday, April 17, 2020 at the
Jupiter Medical Center.
The daughter of the late Florian and Pauline Mraz Ambra, she was born January 3,
1931 in Liberty. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 43 years, Frank
J. Stuart. Helen earned RN and MSN degrees from the NYU Bellevue School of Nursing
in New York City beginning her career as a surgical scrub nurse for Maimonides
Hospital in Liberty. Following mergers with hospitals in Callicoon and Monticello to
create Community General Hospital of Sullivan County, she became the Nursing
Administrator, then Senior Associate Director until retirement. After retiring and
moving to Tequesta, FL in 2002, she was a board member/chair of the Broadview
Condominium Association where she resided until recently and a member of the St.
Jude Catholic Church in Tequesta.
Tequesta, FL, near Hutchinson Island, is where her family and friends vacationed for
decades. She and Frank had decided years before that this is where they would enjoy
their retirement. Helen loved the holidays, complete with family gatherings at
Thanksgiving and Christmas. She was an avid gardener with a green thumb for
Christmas cacti inside, as well as her roses, peonies and perennial gardens outside.
Helen loved to be in the warmth of the sun.
She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Susan G. Stuart (Dr. Michael V. Arbige) of
Montara, CA, Sean and Katie; her sons, Stephen J. Stuart Sr. (Carolyn) of Sherrills
Ford, NC, Stephen Jr. and Christopher; Timothy M. Stuart (Sherry) of Kennesaw GA,
Kristen, Lauren and Matthew; her loving brother, John P. Ambra (Stephanie), of
Shrewsbury, MA, Andrew; three great grandchildren, William Lambert, Penny Bringe,
Senna Lambert; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her
brother, Stephen P. Ambra, Sr. and her sisters, Mary A. Fanning and Elizabeth A.
Calkin.
She leaves behind many lifelong friends and their family members from around the
country who will remember her dearly.
Helen's final resting place will be in St. Peter's Church Cemetery in Liberty, aside
her husband. A Celebration of Life will be held on a date to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Helen's name to: St. Jude
Catholic Church, 204 US-1, Tequesta, Florida 33469.
