One of my favorite events is coming up next weekend and it is the Mohican Lake Rod and Gun Club’s Pulled Pork Sandwich Take Out Only Dinner. The dinner offerings are all homemade and its slow cooked smoked pulled pork with BBQ sauce on a roll, with a container of Carolina sauce on the side, coleslaw, baked beans, and dessert (if I remember it was two warm chocolate chip cookies that were gone by the end of The Club’s driveway!). Everything is made from scratch by someone who definitely knows what they are doing and the price is only $10.00 and benefits the Rod and Gun Club’s community programs and activities. If you are like me and raised way up north in Boston you are probably wondering what the heck Carolina sauce is. Well, it is a dipping mop sauce made with vinegar and mustard and it’s slightly tangy and completely delicious. The Takeout Dinner event will take place on Saturday, May 20th at the Club which is located at 261 Leers Road in Glen Spey and the drive thru pick up at the club is from 4-6pm. Tickets to this dinner always sell out very quickly so to get your tickets go to the Mohican Rod and Gun Club on Facebook and message them or call them at 845-701-3578.

Ok people- Next Saturday, May 20th from 8-Noon is an important time for all of us- It is the annual Spring Clean Up Day for the Town of Highland- or as we have known it for years it’s Dump Day! What that means is you get to bring up to one pickup truck of junk you want to dispose of up to the new Highland Highway facility at 719 State Route 55 (behind the Senior Center) for free. At the Highland Highway there will be town staff to assist you and several dumpsters. There are a few rules you will need to follow, the first is you need to see our Town Clerk Sue Hoffman and she will ask for your address and you get a pass card that given in at the time you bring your truckload to the Highway Department. There are some items they will not take such as tires, no brush or yard waste, no household garbage, no paint cans, oil products, pesticides or any other hazardous waste. Also, all drums and tanks must be completely empty and cut open and crushed-and propane tanks will not be accepted. No fuel tanks or oil drums will be accepted. Propane tanks twenty gallons or less will need to be deposited at the designated landfill location. Any old or broken appliances and scrap metal must be brought to the Highland Transfer Station and disposed of for free during the Station’s regular business hours. This includes any refrigeration units, old computers, monitors. and scrap metal and old televisions and other electronics. Clean Up Day is a great opportunity to tidy up your shed and get rid of a lot of old stuff that may be causing a hazard to you and your neighbors. If you need more information, you can see our Town Clerk Sue Hoffman during her regular hours or call her at 845-557-6085.
