December 1 - With another slightly weird Covid-19 Thanksgiving in the books, its' time to think about the upcoming Christmas season and how we as families can celebrate our holiday traditions safely observing social distancing and contact free events. I have two great suggestions.

One of my favorite Christmas events, The Barryville Chamber of Commerce's 7th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting, will be taking place (with the necessary precautions) on Saturday, December 5th at the site of the soaring thirty-five foot perfectly shaped Concolor Fir tree (thank you Steven and Pam of Der Oskar Tree Service!) in the center round-about in the River Road Cul de Sac Pollinator Garden Park on Route 97 /55 in Barryville beginning at 7 p.m.

This year the event will be hosted by two Broadway stars, Barryville's own Erin West (42nd Street, The Grand Ole Opry, and the Amazon Studios Emmy Award winning The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) and Kyle Dean Massey (Wicked, Pippin and the TV drama Nashville).

There will be special performances by Pastor Charles Perez and Family and singer and performer, Bret Shaggy Travis whose performance at last year's Tree Lighting was such a huge hit! Unfortunately out of an abundance of caution Santa and Mrs. Claus will not be in attendance this year, but fear not there will be more than enough entertainment packed in to make the Tree Lighting a “not-to-be-missed” family friendly holiday event.

There are several ways you can enjoy and participate in the Tree Lighting. For the first time ever, WJFF Radio will be broadcasting the Tree Lighting live on 90.50 FM, or on facebook.com/WJFFRadio/ and, on Facebook.com/GreaterBarryvilleChamberofCommerce.

There will be a limited (thirty people-first come, first served) space at the Tree site in the Pollinator Garden Park in Barryville but you need to reserve a spot by RSVP to info@Barryvilleny.com.

The best spot to view the event is from the Shohola Bridge walkway that overlooks both the Pollinator Garden and the Delaware River and with all these sites there will be more than enough space to safely social distance for everyone attending.

Holiday treats made by Konrad's Kitchen's Bakery will be served but please bring your own warm beverage. The Pollinator Garden Park does lend itself to having space for social distancing but if you prefer there will be an opportunity to view the event from across the street in the parking lots of Clancy's Diner, Clobr Men's Store and McKean Realty where you can stay in your car and watch and listen to the Tree Lighting.

The Tree Lighting is a free event and for more information go to barryvilleny.com.

A new holiday event is happening at Bethel Woods that has a beautifully designed mile long holiday drive-thru light display called “Peace, Love and Lights”. The Lights display will happen everyday until January 3rd starting at 5 p.m. (except Wednesdays starting at 6 p.m.) until closing at 10 p.m.

The suggested speed for cars going through the drive thru is 5 miles an hour to safely see the hundreds of light sculptures and displays and the drive takes about 45 minutes. During the Lights show drive thru you can tune into radio station 107.7 FM for Christmas music to accompany your drive. The cost is $20.00 per car and tickets can be purchased online at Ticketmaster and the ticket is good for anytime the display is open on the date selected.

Tickets can also be purchased “day of” at the gate of the Conservatory at Bethel Woods (the starting point of the Drive Thru Lights show) located at 597 West Shore Road, Swan Lake.

There are other holiday related events happening at Bethel Wood so go to www.bethelwoodscenter.org or call 845-583-2000 for additional information.
