Mr. Steier, your letter re the Monticello Motor Club is about 14 years too late. When they opened in 2008 a group of us were at the Town of Thompson Board under Tony Cellini, every meeting, complaining about the roaring, and trying to get them to put up noise barriers. Many elders who lived near there for their whole lives described how intrusive the noise was and how it negatively affected their lives. One person even had a heart attack from the incredible aggravation of having their lives so destroyed. Upon speaking directly to one of the originators, he told me that there is a reason why you only see those noise barriers on State roads - they are too expensive and that all the other areas they pitched the track to, demanded those barriers, so they came to Monticello because our Board didn’t ask for them. Every member of the Club paid $125,000 to join and then $7,500 a year. Whose voice is your Town Board going to listen to, yours or theirs? The issues are about taxes, jobs and all the businesses that owe their livelihoods to this group. Sorry, but this is life here. My area, Rock Hill, is being hit with warehouses of unknown origin. We’re talking about heavy truck traffic, traffic lights, our air and noise quality being drastically changed and I’ve been here 54 years. Who are they going to listen to?
