HIGHLAND LAKE – A History of Highland Lakewith Peter Sulzbach will be presented at NACL – North American Cultural Laboratory – 110 Highland Lake Rd., Highland Lake, on Saturday, September 24 at 7 p.m.

Anyone who’s spent any time in the area around Highland Lake has likely heard the legendary lore of “sunken treasure” in the form of slot machines languishing on the lake bottom… but is it true?

In conjunction with Anniversary programming at NACL, there will be a special evening of history and living memory this Saturday with Peter Sulzbach, whose parents ran businesses on the shore of this resort haven in its heyday.

Peter is 82, and spent his youth in Highland Lake helping his parents run the bait shop, a bowling alley, boat docks and rentals, bungalows and seasonal apartments. He also raised two sons who have fond memories of fishing on the lake.

Peter will reminisce, with tales from the mid-20th-century, revealing details about night life at the boarding houses, explaining the mystery of the counter-clockwise movement of boats upon the lake, and much more.

The presentation will conclude with a Q & A. If you’re interested in Catskills history or have your own tales to contribute at the end, don’t miss this special opportunity to participate in oral history!

This event is free. Refreshments will be available by donation, to benefit NACL.
