Joyce Marie MacAdam (Brasington) passed away peacefully on May 27, 2022 after a long battle with cancer. Joyce was a long-time resident of Monticello, NY, but spent the majority of her retirement years in Zephyrhills, FL, where she loved her Valleydale community and valued the friendships she formed there.
Joyce was born on June 24, 1944 in Monticello, NY to Emily and Herbert Brasington. She was the youngest of 3 children and loved her sister Judy and brother Gene dearly. She went on to have 4 children of her own and was their biggest supporter in every aspect of their lives. On February 5, 1988, Joyce earned another title as “Gammy”, when her first grandchild, Stephanie was born. She ultimately became an adored grandmother to 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, who were her pride and joy.
Joyce was a faithful employee of the State of New York in both the Monticello School district and the New York State prison system from the early 1970s to the early 2000s when she retired.
Joyce valued her time with her family more than anything. She never missed a chance to attend one of her grandkid’s events, regardless of what it was. She was a simple woman and found joy sitting outside getting lost in a book, crocheting a beautiful afghan, taking a long walk while saying hello to every neighbor, and a good game of cards. She volunteered with hospice and was always willing to lend a hand to a neighbor or volunteer for one of the many activities at the Valleydale clubhouse.
Joyce is survived by her loving children Cindy (Dean) Gilmour of Monticello, NY, Deborah (Mike) DeMatteo of Ft. Myers, FL, Brenda (Jerry) McAuliffe of Boston, MA, and Scott (Kim) MacAdam of Doswell, VA, her brother Gene (Kathy) Brasington of Albany, NY, and her brother-in-law Augie Artus of Zephyrhills, FL. She is the cherished Grandma to her 11 grandchildren: Stephanie (Nick) Manitaras, Tyler Gilmour, Michelle (Matt) Bishop, Megan (Zack) Robertson, Brian, Brooke and Jordan MacAdam, Michael (Jamie) DeMatteo, and Danny, Sean and Erin McAuliffe. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren: Reid Dugal, George Manitaras, Brody Bishop, and Michael DeMatteo, as well as many other cousins, nieces, nephews and close friends. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved sister, Judy Artus.
At her request there will be no funeral services but a memorial note may be left at the Hodges Family Funeral Home site or a memorial donation made to the Moffitt Cancer Center. A Valleydale memorial coffee will be scheduled in the fall when her friends reconvene after their summers elsewhere.
