140 Years Ago - 1880

On July 5, 1880, Leander Robinson and Arletta Benedict, both of Youngsville, were married at Liberty by Rev. J.N. Husted.

On July 7th, Celia W. Finn and W.S. Jones of Pike Pond were married at Port Jervis at the residence of Henry Finn by Rev. A.P. Botsford.

The track of the NYO &W Railway is to be laid with steel rails from Middletown west.

Mr. Charles Schaaf of Scranton, Pa., is visiting friends in this place. He is the son-in-law of Mr. Scheidell of this village.

Charles Quick of North Branch challenges Peter Klein of Callicoon Depot to a $25 walk at the Eagle Hotel in Jeffersonville, to be notified within 30 days.

During the thunderstorm of Monday evening last, the barn of Patrick McGrath of Egypt, this county, was struck by lightning and burned together with about a ton of hay.

130 Years Ago - 1890

Livingston Manor, July 7 — A fearful, tragic ending of man and wife, near here, has just come to light. Mrs. George T. Darler took her life by drowning in the Beaverkill, about six miles from this place on Saturday night, having left her home unbeknown to anyone. A short time, perhaps only a few minutes after the discovery of the body, George Darler, her grief-stricken husband, shot himself through the head with almost instant death.

Livingston Manor, July 7 — T. W. White is having his hotel painted inside and out… Elia Starr has sold the Times office to W.D. and F.A. Ensign of Hancock. The Times will come in the new firm's name this week. We wish them abundant success… J.F. Sherwood has his new house on River Street raised.

120 Years Ago - 1900

The annual prize shoot of the Scheutzen Verein was held on the Fourth. The members formed in procession in the morning at the Callicoon House and with Gilbert's Band, a decorated wagon carrying the prizes, marched to John Mootz's. The prizes were won as follows: First, clock, John Mootz; second, cake dish, Peter Dorrer; third, hammock, Edward Hahn; and fifth, cracker bowl, F. Steinhauser.

Mrs. Martha H. Martin died of heart trouble Sunday at the home of her son, Frank Hogencamp, near Youngsville. She was born in Delaware County 68 years ago. Her first husband's name was Hogencamp and they lived in Bethel for some time. After his death she was married to A.J. Benedict of Liberty.

James D. Decker, a prominent citizen of Sullivan County, died at his residence in Pond Eddy Monday night leaving a large family of children. He served two terms as Member of the Assembly and had been supervisor of the town of Lumberland for a number of terms. The deceased was superintendent and agent for Chester W. Chapin, who has a large game preserve in the town.

110 Years Ago - 1910

John V. Weissenfluh, formerly of Youngsville, and Miss Martha J. Rohliffs of Brooklyn, were married June 28, at the home of the bride's mother, Mrs. Matilda Rohliffs, in Brooklyn.

Edward A. Stalker of Scranton, and Miss Anna B. Millen of Stevensville were married at the bride's home June 28.

George F. Decker and Miss Mary E. Schneider of Livingston Manor were married in Middletown last week. They will live in Livingston Manor.

Miss Lydia Austin of Bethel and Burton Calkin of Fosterdale were married Wednesday night at the bride's home by Rev. S.R. Spriggs.

Wm. Ebert of Hortonville and Mrs. Amelia Brohan of North Branch were married last Sunday by Justice Starck of Callicoon.

The Erie is making plans to build a passenger shed across the track from the station at Callicoon.

100 Years Ago - 1920

Sunday, the first Mass was said in the new Catholic Church at Lake Huntington which has been under construction the past few months and is now sufficiently completed for use. The church will be known as Our Lady of the Lake. It stands on the Wragge estate. The dedication and blessing has been deferred until Sunday, August 15, the patronal feast day of the church.

Saturday, the town of Callicoon received a New Holland portable stone crusher for use by its highway department. The machine is similar to the one used by the town of Fremont. It crushes the stone directly on the road and does away with handling the stone from the crusher. It propels itself by means of a drum and cable.… Close upon his lease to the town of Delaware of a 2 1/2 ton Mack truck, Geo. W. Sawyer of Callicoon has leased another truck to the town of Lumberland for use by its highway department.

Corp. Russell D. Sprague Post of the American Legion of Liberty claims the first woman member of the organization in the county in Miss Susan Black who joined last week. Pvt. Emmett Turner Post of Callicoon can beat the Liberty Post by about ten months with Miss Mary B. Meyer of Long Eddy who enlisted as a Red Cross nurse and joined the Post at its organization.

90 Years Ago - 1930

Mrs. Ida Cook, widow of the late Theodore Cook of Hortonville, died in a Binghamton hospital yesterday morning (July 8) after a short illness. Interment will be made in the Hortonville Cemetery.

Thursday and Saturday eve­ning will be one of the special attraction events at the Western Hotel, located at Callicoon. The management has secured the services of Joe Laurence and his Silver Slipper Orchestra, formerly of Atlantic City. The ballroom has been redecorated and it has a pleasant atmosphere. The first 25 girls entering the ballroom will each receive a box of candy. There will be a waltz contest, a Lucky Number Dance and a fox trot contest.

The Annual Fourth of July celebration at Narrowsburg last Friday was a success according to reports. The gross receipts were nearly $1,000.

Gene Tunney, former heavyweight champion of the world, and Irvin Cobb, noted writer, were expected to arrive at the Ward estate in DeBruce Monday for several days' stay.

80 Years Ago - 1940

William Roser, 17, who lived with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Roser on the Sand Pond Road, about 3 miles from Youngsville, died in the Liberty Hospital Thursday morning from a broken neck, a crushed skull and other injuries, sustained Wednesday night when the car he was driving overturned and threw him out on his head. His companion, Paul Reinheimer, 18, who lives with his sister, Mrs. Adolph Frey, also on the Sand Pond Road, returned home today from the Callicoon Hospital where he was treated for a slight skull fracture and cuts and bruises.

A large number of voters attended the annual meeting of the Youngsville Central School District Tuesday night because of the contest over the selection of two trustees, one to replace Edward Schroeder, who died recently, and one in place of William H. Wagner, whose term expired. The contest was rather close. David Laverty acted as chairman of the meeting. For the Schroeder vacancy Harold Flaccus was elected over Fred Hembdt, 92 to 75. For re-election William H. Wagner was defeated by Ralph Bryan, 83 to 77. The holdover trustees are Philip Kespert, George Ellmauer, and Karl Spielmann. A budget of $21,000 was adopted.

Miss Clara Knise graduated from the Rochester Dental Dispensary School for Dental Hygienists last week. She is a Callicoon High School graduate, Class of ‘37.

70 Years Ago - 1950

Gary Weiss has completed his night flying course as a cadet with the U.S. Navy. He will now go for advanced courses at the Pensacola, Fla., base… Midshipman Valleau Curtis took off and landed six times on the USS Cabot in the Gulf of Mexico to complete his aircraft training qualifications. He will go for further training at Corpus Christi in Texas where, after four months, he will win his coveted Navy wings of gold. Another local youth, Charles “Tubby” Mills has completed his cross-country solo flight successfully. A graduate this year of DVCS, he is quite adept at flying.

It has been reported that Paul Allen and his family were in Korea when the trouble started there but were safely evacuated to Japan. Mr. Allen, a Farm Bureau agent, had been in Korea as an agricultural advisor to the American Economic Mission in Korea.

Arlen Ebert of Callicoon is attending the National Jamboree of Boy Scouts in Valley Forge, Pa.

Born at the Callicoon Hospital, a girl to Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Fletcher of Equinunk, Pa., on Saturday; a girl on Sunday to Dr. and Mrs. Arnold Bennett of Narrowsburg and on the same day, a girl to Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Possemato of Hancock.

The engagement of Virginia Townsend of Jeffersonville to Walter Cook of Hortonville has been announced by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Town­send.

Mr. and Mrs. Bernhard Schehl of Abrahamsville quietly celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary on July 6. ...Mr. and Mrs. Blakely of Roscoe celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a family dinner at the Antrim Lodge on Saturday.

60 Years Ago - 1960

There were plenty of ladies shoes scattered about last Friday evening when a car with a hot box was switched in the Gottschalk siding of the Erie R.R. at Hankins. The firemen were called but to fight the fire they had to get inside the car which was loaded to the roof with ladies shoes. It is reported that many pairs disappeared from the scene and that to get proper sizes a great deal of swapping is now going on.

Jacob Perlmutter, 47-year-old Monticello roofing contractor, died of injuries sustained Saturday when he fell from a roof that day.

Howard Schue of Liberty re­ceived notice June 24 that he had been accepted for admission to the United States Military Academy at West Point. He entered the academy on July 5.

The United Methodist Church of Narrowsburg has purchased the building formerly used by the Big Eddy Telephone Company. After being renovated, the building will be used to house the minister of the parish and his family.

50 years ago - 1970

Nancy Engert, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Engert, has recently completed training at the International Stewardess College in Miami. In her first venture, she served aboard a 747 jet transport on a flight to Europe. She is working for Pan Am.

Plans for remodeling the former United National Bank building in Callicoon are virtually set, according to trustees of the state-chartered institution and renovations should be completed in the fall.

Miss Cheryl Luckey became the bride of Willis G. Armbrust at the Kenoza Lake Methodist Church on July 11.

A son, Walter Stephen III, was born June 9 to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Kellam Jr. (Sharon Milk) of Lookout, Pa.

Miss Terry Meyer of Lake Huntington was named Queen of the Cochecton-Lake Huntington Firemen's Field Day on July 12.

Mr. and Mrs. Al Aleschus of Cohoes announce the birth of a son, Shane Alan, born July 4. She is the former Kathleen Hermann of Callicoon …Mr. and Mrs. Frank Caldiero of Hortonville became parents of a daughter, Tricia Ann, born June 26… At the Liberty Loomis Hospital it was a son, Peter Abram, July 3, to Mr. and Mrs. Bob Dice of Claryville; a son, July 4, to Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Klein of Liberty; a son, July 5, to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Banks of Livingston Manor; and a boy, July 9, to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hindley of Monticello.

Miss Barbara Them became the bride of Ralph M. Price of Damascus on June 20 at the Damascus Methodist Church.

40 Years Ago - 1980

The Town of Thompson and the Village of Monticello held the last of their joint public information meetings on what was to have been their common wastewater facilities plan, on Thursday evening in the Monticello Village Hall. The meeting, which was required by federal regulations was redundant because in March it was decided that the most cost effective solution was for each community to “go it alone.”

Deborah Stein of White Sulphur Springs and Lester Simonson of Jeffersonville were married June 14 in a double-ring ceremony at St. George's Church in Jeffersonville… Miss Tammy Dobbs of Monticello became the bride of John Zepeda of Altus, Ohio, on July 4, in a ceremony performed at King's in Livingston Manor… Michelle Gelman and Joel Appelbaum were married June 8 at the Concord Hotel… Donna Lee Parks of Youngsville and Gary Wayne Bright of Livingston Manor were married June 28 at the Community Reformed Church in Youngsville… Janet L. Hessinger of White Sulphur Springs became the bride of Keith T. Fritzinger of Shilington, Pa., on June 14 at the Community United Methodist Church in Poughkeepsie. Both are employed by IBM in East Fishkill.

Three days of general unrest on the streets of Monticello peaked Wednesday night as approximately 50 youths, armed with sticks and baseball bats, march up Broadway, smashed store and car windows along the way and started one fire with a Molotov cocktail. The youths, who had gathered earlier that evening on Evergreen Drive, had reportedly threatened to cause trouble in the wake of a stabbing the night before as the result of tension between local black youths and three white city youths.

The Holy Cross Parish, which worshiped at St. Joseph's Seminary for nearly a century, again has a permanent home, with the dedication of a new church on Route 97. The seminary closed Christmas 1977 and for the past nearly three years parishioners have attended Mass in Hankins and Long Eddy. Groundbreaking ceremonies August 12, 1979, attended by honored guest Mrs. Lillian Carter, marked the beginning of construction of the new church. On July 20, Terence Cardinal Cooke will celebrate Mass at the official dedication of the new church which settles down in its first truly permanent home since 1869. Mrs. Carter has accepted an invitation to be present at the ceremonies. She is a personal friend of Father Anthony Moore, assigned to Holy Cross Church.

“One hundred twenty years in the same neighborhood” will be the theme of the Hortonville Presbyterian Church on Sunday, July 20 when members and friends celebrate the 120th anniversary of the church.

The Sullivan-Ulster-Orange Society of Fellows of the Anti-Defamation League of the B'nai B'rith will honor Dorothy Shapiro of Liberty on August 21, recognizing her work of 20 years.

A daughter, Casey Ann, was born July 8, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Carbondale, to Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Ross of Long Eddy. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Neer of Long Eddy are the proud maternal grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Ross Sr. of Equinunk, Pa., are the happy paternal grandparents.

With only a few exceptions, the National Park Service staff of rangers — “Smokey the Bears” — have been drawn from residents who live in or near the valley. This alert and personable crew of mainly young people has proven itself a credit both to the Upper Delaware, which they call home, and the government service which they now officially represent.

30 Years Ago - 1990

Mary Ann Ruggerio and Wes John Wallgren, both of Liberty, were married June 16 at St. Peter's Church… Donna Marie Schmidt and Michael Roger Stauch exchanged wedding vows on June 2 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Kenosha, Wisc. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Stauch of Callicoon.

Mr. and Mrs. Carl Salomon of Grahamsville, former owners of the Miss Monticello Diner, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a party at the Forestburgh firehouse, hosted by their family… Oscar and Ethel Brey Schaefer celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the Youngsville Firemen's Hall on June 30, hosted by their son, Robert, and daughter, Karen.

The engagement of Michele Elizabeth Hessinger of Callicoon Center to Gary John Brockner, son of John and Joann Brockner of North Branch, has been announced by her parents, Mary Catherine Hessinger and Valentine Hessinger, both of Callicoon Center. A June 1992 wedding is planned… Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. White of Callicoon announced the engagement of their daughter, Regina, to James Bruce Walton of Warren, Ohio. An October wedding is planned.

Members of the Livingston Manor Teachers Association recently held a retirement dinner in honor of Gertrude Sturdevant, Walter Bjorn, Doris Reynolds and Ann Marie Lohr, at The Club at Villa Roma in Callicoon.

20 Years Ago - 2000

Thousands of people, hundreds of vendors and sunny weather helped make Saturday's Found­er's Day Street Fair in Wurtsboro a big success. Fair organizers estimated that 15,000 people attended the street fair, which featured nearly 150 vendors offering food, drinks, handmade crafts, clothing and many other items. Fireworks were planned for Saturday night following the close of the street fair, which was celebrating its 10th anniversary.

If information is indeed the currency of the modern age, Sullivan County as two new bankers at the helm of the most frequently used information resources. Lee Bosco, the county's new Director of Public Information, started his new job yesterday. Roberta Lockwood, the new president of the Sullivan County Visitors Association, and primarily responsible for promoting the county's tourism industry, took over the job on June 15 and is still in the process of moving here from upstate.

OBITUARIES — Sandra L. “Sandi” Panchyshyn of Lake Huntington, a registered nurse and a lifelong resident, died Saturday, July 8, 2000, at the Grover M. Hermann Division of Community General Hospital in Callicoon. She was 38.…Gordon R. Nervegna, a 9-year resident of Tyler Hill, Pa., died unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 5, 2000, at his home. He was 56.

10 Years Ago - 2010

Duggan Elementary School Principal Patti Sonnenschein said she gave each student a construction-paper heart so they could write farewells to the school they loved as the school prepared for its last day open. She might as well have been giving them real pieces of her broken heart as it was a tough last day when watching the buses pull around Duggan's parking lot one last time. Sonnenschein said staff and faculty had been working hard to ensure a happy normalcy in the days and hours leading up to the final goodbye.

Monticello Gymnastics Club held its 26th annual exhibition, a fundraiser for the club, held in the Monticello High School gymnasium. The exhibition included fresh gymnasts, who are just 14 months old, up to eighth-grade students. Tweed continues to work with the athletes until graduation from high school, currently coaching about 200 kids in his program.

While other young men and women were playing baseball, the members of the Monticello Central School modified baseball team volunteered to assist the Town of Thompson to rid paper and garbage from the area on the town's recent Litterpluck Day.
