LOCH SHELDRAKE – The SUNY Sullivan Lady Generals were crowned NJCAA Region XV Champions after defeating the Westchester Community College Vikings 88-70 on February 27.

Scoring was spread out across the board, with Deivejon Harris, voted Region XV Women’s Most Outstanding Player, leading with 18 points and 18 rebounds. Four other Lady Generals netted double digit points in the game, Barbara Bruno (15), Keyani Sidberry (13), Anisa Perry (10) and Aniyah Hector (18).

On Saturday, the Lady Generals took on Niagara CCC in the District semifinals, and were defeated 72-47. The women’s team finished with an impressive 20-4 record and won the Mid-Hudson Conference and Region XV Championship, but the loss to Niagara barred them from earning a trip to play in the National Tournament.

“We started the regular season off 14-0,” explained Region XV Coach of the Year Ben Newberg. “Coming back from winter break we battled some covid issues and injuries.”

Despite the struggles, the team was still able to finish the regular season 20-4. “On the year we had 10 games decided by eight points or less, and we went 8-2 in those games. Our biggest strength is that we can defend, and when we lock in defensively, we are really hard to beat.”
