Lady Yellowjackets defeat Lady Wildcats in double OT

ELDRED –– Eldred’s girls soccer team is under a new head coach for the second year in a row, this season it is alumni Sami Clemmons at the helm. The team has some new faces after graduation thinned their ranks last year, but their tenacity remains. They hosted the Lady Wildcats for a league matchup on Monday night, and it took all of regulation and two overtimes to decide the winner in the 5-4 contest.

While it is clear that both teams still have work to do on the defensive side, both offenses worked well, advancing the ball and booting shots at the opposing goal keepers.

The Lady Wildcats opened the game with an early goal, just two and a half minutes into the contest, but before ten minutes had passed in the contest, Eldred had equalized and taken the lead with back-to-back goals two minutes apart.

The rest of the first half was scoreless, but both teams showed their ability to move the ball up and down the field.

In the second half, the Lady Wildcats outscored Eldred three goals to one, and when regulation ended, the two teams were knotted at four apiece.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first overtime, but in the second it was Eldred’s Ksenia Sosnowski who scored her third goal of the game and won the game.

Eldred’s Sydney Furler netted Eldred’s other two goals.

Livingston Manor’s goals were scored by Anastasia Niforatos, Rebecca Gashinsky (2) and Kelsey Ryder.

The two teams will see each other again in Livingston Manor later this season for a divisional rematch, but with the loss of Chapel Field in the division, Eldred has already qualified for Sectionals. Now, Livingston Manor needs to win the rematch if they want to make it to Sectionals.

Eldred’s Ksenia Sosnowski continued her soccer dominance on Wednesday, earning her second hat trick in as many games in a 5-0 victory over Liberty.

Livingston Manor lost a non-league match against Chester 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon.

Coach Sami Clemmons spoke about both games after the win over Liberty. “Grace Loretto, our goalie, absolutely killed it. Against Livingston Manor we were aggressive to the ball, and we played well, but can do better. It can only go up from here.”
