LEIMAY Dance Ensemble comes to Hurleyville for August Residency

Posted

HURLEYVILLE – Hurleyville Performing Arts Centre (HPAC) is delighted to host multidisciplinary Colombian and Japanese born artists Ximena Garnica and Shige Moriya with their New York City-based LEIMAY Ensemble for a unique performing and teaching residency during the month of August 2021.

LEIMAY will present multiple outdoor public artworks, and lead workshops and discussions that offer multiple opportunities for the local community to engage in a special embodied dialogue with the artists.

This will be LEIMAY’s third visit to the Hurleyville Performing Arts Centre. The ensemble has made a remarkable impression through their past performances and built a supportive following in the area as a result.

“LEIMAY always creates an incredibly stimulating and impactful atmosphere for its audiences. Their performances evoke a curious beauty that raises thoughtful questions to be pondered long after the event ends. I feel honored to have them return to HPAC this summer - it will be a must-see for anyone interested in the arts,” says Executive Director Erin Dudley.

This series of events will begin on Wednesday, August 4, with LEIMAY LUDUS: Dancing with the Environment. This workshop for teens and adults will explore interplay between materials and bodies and how each is affected by the other through interdependence. It is open to participants age 15 and over, and free for those under 18.

Next is a performance, discussion, and dinner on Friday, August 13. This will be a 35 minute activation followed by a conversation with a focus on reshaping environmental ethics, what it means to center and de-center human life in our understanding of the world, and how embodied practices like dance help us answer these questions.

On Saturday, August 14th, LEIMAY will present a full day’s worth of performances/activations, and workshops. All programs will be offered in both Spanish and English, and are open to guests of all ages.

Finally, Correspondences - The Audience Files, will take place from August 11 to September 13. This is a growing oral and written interactive archive for audiences to engage with over conversation by sharing their responses to questions of being, interdependence, connectivity, and environmental ethics. QR codes located at Fireman’s Park and various tables at Tango Cafe will guide the audience to engage online with the work. Correspondences - The Audience Files will be open to the public for 30 days, starting one week prior to the installation launch on August 5.

All dates, times, locations, and other details can be found at hurleyvilleartscentre.org/leimay-residency.
