HAPPY NEW YEAR......2023.  It is a beautiful white day here in Liberty. I can say that as I sit in my recliner in my warm living room. I was very concerned early this morning as I saw a car having trouble making it up slick California Avenue from the quick early morning covering. Well, I wrote that a few days ago and since then our grass has been uncovered, the temps are up, and I guess it's not a great time for those guys who count on some plow money and kids wanting to sleigh-ride and make a snowman.

UKRAINIAN CHRISTMAS:  With Kurpil Ukrainian roots, our granddaughter, Kathleen Burns Brandt and her husband, Thaddeus rented a beautiful hall for the family to gather and celebrate. Everyone made a favorite old-time recipe from bread, cabbage rolls, etc. My sweetest memory is of Austin, our great-grandson.  He welcomed me with a hug and invited me to sit and make a puzzle with him. Barely two years old....but no problem as he pushed the pieces together so quickly. Food was delicious and our traditions were enjoyed by all.

TAX TIME COMING: Liberty Library will be having FREE TAX PREP SESSIONS. Monday, February 6th and Thursday February 9th.  You must register by calling the Library..292-6070 or e-mail lib@rcls.org to book a 1.5 hr. session from 11:30 to 1:00 pm.

LIBERTY FIRE DEPARTMENT: Our utmost thanks to these VOLUNTEERS who are always ready to help us. Remember to send donations. I was told this was a record year with over 426 calls. Thank God there are those neighbors out there trained and ready when needed.

LIBERTY RISING: Remembering the years that Frank DeMayo and a group of local "do-ers" started a group called ALIVE. We contacted Main Street store owners with regard to their empty store windows. Our displays in those windows assured that the town presented well and side-street stores were given a little helpful note. Now SUPERVISOR DEMAYO is looking to form a volunteer group called LIBERTY RISING with that spirit, and he is expecting a great Spring and Summer season. I like his choice of the title....LIBERTY RISING.

LIBERTY RISING ETC:  Frank DeMayo says there have been a lot of property acquisitions in the Village, and they are working on getting the new owner's intentions to create quality retail spaces. Bridge & Tunnel Brewery on Lake Street with Rich Castagna leading and West 17 Brewery on Sullivan Ave. are new businesses doing well. RED DIAMOND bar and restaurant on South Main with a pool game room is a happy place. MUNSON DINER is now a real gathering place. They had to expand with a beautiful new dining room. The Lake Street hill sets them high with great views, the Presbyterian Church landmark and even Hillig's Castle in the distance.

Okay....yes, LIBERTY RISING.

ADULT WOMEN'S SOCCER LEAGUE: Starting March 1st.....6:30 at the Senior Center. Sounds like a great idea.  Have fun while exercising and competing.

PARKSVILLE: Great leaders there....so I have to say PARKSVILLE RISING. The lighting of the MENORAH recently was a beautiful event. It is a great drive from Liberty with views over the valleys and NYSP sitting patiently by roadside...ha.  Cabernet Franks is a great gathering place for food and drinks, meeting friends and adding life to the hamlet.  Stay tuned for the "RISING" plans that are in the works.

DOLORES THOMPSON GADSHIAN: It is so sad to mention the shocking loss of Dolores Thompson Gadshian recently. Condolences to her daughter Tina Krum and the rest of her family. Words are not enough, but memories of this wonderful woman will be with family and friends forever.

Ending here on a sad note as Dolores was such a positive person, but I know she would say, “onward.” She certainly made her mark on her hometown in the best way.  Yes, a terrible shock losing her, not only for her family, but for us, LIBERTY residents who loved her expressions so often about her home town.  RIP Dolores. You were our blessing.

Bye for now.
