MAMAKATING — Famed Danish philosopher and writer, Soren Kirkegaard, once wrote: “What is a poet? A person who conceals profound anguish in his heart but whose lips are so formed that as sighs and cries pass over them they sound like beautiful music.” Poetry is meant to insight emotion in readers, and our Sullivan County Poet Laureate, Sharon Kennedy-Nolle’s work does just that. The Sullivan Public Library Alliance is pleased to announce that we have extended the tenure of Ms. Kennedy-Nolle, and all future Poets Laureate to two years. This change was applied to the current poet in the hopes that there will be many more opportunities for poetry events and programs now that pandemic related shutdowns are reduced and we can meet safely in person.

Throughout her already busy tenure as poet laureate, Ms. Kennedy-Nolle has presented readings and workshops at local libraries and events, engaged with local artists via the En Plein Air series of writing and art workshops, and taught students the basics of writing poetry.

The author of Black Wick: Selected Elegies, Kennedy-Nolle has received many acclamations and awards for her work and the Mamakating Library is thrilled to announce that she will again, be visiting our library this winter. On Saturday, February 18th, the Mamakating Library, in collaboration with Ms. Kennedy-Nolle, will present a poetry workshop. Through this workshop we hope to encourage new or experienced poets to put their thoughts and emotions on paper and learn how to craft a poem that resonates with readers. Poets who wish to have their piece workshopped during the program should send a poem (no more than one page long) to sullivanpoetlaureate22.23@gmail.com by February 8th. All are welcome to attend and learn about the process and benefits of workshopping your writing, even if you are not submitting a poem. Registration is available online at mamakatinglibrary.org or by calling 845-888-8004.

Visit your local library in person or online to learn about their program offerings, including upcoming Poet Laureate events. You can also follow Sullivan County Poet Laureate on Facebook to keep up with their activities.
