Lighting up LaPolt Park

LIBERTY – With the Town of Liberty expected to be acquiring LaPolt Park from their counterpart, the Village, town officials discussed at their Town Board meeting on May 15 what might be able to be done to illuminate the park at night.

Town Supervisor Frank DeMayo said that he wished to ask the village to fix any broken lights in the park before property is transfered over to town.

DeMayo also noted the Liberty Department of Parks and Recreation’s hopeful involvement in the proposed illumination project, as he asked Liberty’s Parks and Rec Director James Guara to help look at lights on the stage that sits on the property. This development was brought on by a recounting by DeMayo on a recent non-physical confrontation he experienced in the park, the audio of which was recorded on the Supervisor’s phone.

DeMayo noted the park’s close proximity to the Liberty Central School District’s main building just down the road as a reason to focus on keeping the park well lit at night and safe at all times.

“I understand some of these people have some real serious issues and I can’t get mad at that, and we can’t discard them like that. So what do we do?” DeMayo said. “Try to come up with other resolutions.”

As for the work that needs to be done, the Supervisor noted that an inventory completed Monday night revealed the gazebo in the park requires minor work and a new paint job, a few benches need slats replaced, and an area of pavers need to be reset. As for the lighting, it would only require finding a few light switches and replacing broken ones.

While unclear when the transfer of the deed and title to LaPolt Park from the village to the town will occur, DeMayo noted it is in progress.

“It’s imminent, it’s gonna happen,” DeMayo said.
