Literacy Volunteers recognize graduates

On Saturday afternoon, October 1, the Literacy Volunteers of Sullivan County held their 2022 GED Graduation inside the Hurleyville Performing Arts Centre, honoring two of their graduates in person, along with several others who could not be in attendance.

“Even for the students that couldn’t make it today, I want to say their first names and honor that they worked so hard to get this,” said Literacy Volunteers of Sullivan County Executive Director Angela Dutcher.

Dutcher, a GED graduate herself, received her Bachelors in Communications from Marist College and has since been working to help students young and old continue their education by getting their GED, halting the rising tide of illiteracy in Sullivan County.

“There’s a spectrum of people that go through the program, they are anywhere from 17 to 70,” stated Dutcher. “Right now we have about 32 registered students of the GED program held at the Literacy Center at the Read It Again bookstore in Monticello.”

Dutcher happily greeted everyone who came through the doors on Saturday to support the graduates, including Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther who accompanied Dutcher on stage to hand each graduate their certificate.

“We’ve worked really hard to give these students what they need, and to prevent them from slipping through the cracks,” added Dutcher, “and I’m really proud of each and every one of them.”
