Little Room for Politics

Dr. David Luchins is a Political Science professor in Touro College in New York. I have listened to his speeches for many years. He is very insightful and sweet. He gives speeches at events outside of his classroom settings and they can be found mainly on aishaudio.com. Some speeches can also be found on YouTube.

He likes to start his speeches with a Dvar Torah. A Dvar Torah is a short discourse on a topic in the Torah. He prefaces his words with the following, “I am not a Rabbi, but as long as Rabbis take the liberty to discuss politics, this political scientist will take the liberty to say a Dvar Torah. I can assure you that I'll do far less damage to their turf than they do to mine!!”

I am also not a Rabbi nor am I a political scientist and hence, I will not be discussing politics. My topic today is about the war situation in Israel and my point will be how unpolitical it is!

I am sure many of my readers have been following along events in Israel on their southern border. Hamas and its rival terrorist groups in the Gaza strip has been launching a barrage of rockets targeting civilians living in Israel.

There have been open miracles on how low the mortality rate has been in Israel. There were a few crazy incidents of rockets whizzing between buildings and not causing harm to people. We certainly see the Hand of G-d protecting the people in Israel.

For those who want a simple line to explain the whole situation, here is one. What would happen if Israel disarmed? A Holocaust. What would happen if Hamas disarmed? Peace in the Middle East. That gives everyone a fairly simple formula to see clearly where the trouble lies.

The options in this situation are so little that there is almost no room for honest politics. When we are true to the facts there is simply no realistic plan for peace nor is there a realistic plan for annexation of these pieces of land into Israel.

The only long-term strategy is the status quo and to better the lives of the Arabs living in the West Bank. This has been going on strongly in the last few years. The economy in the West Bank has been booming. In Gaza it cannot happen because it is governed by terrorist groups.

To his credit, President Biden has been very supportive of Israel. I think it was far more than what people expected and we are all very grateful about it. Biden knows the situation very well and has had an excellent relationship with Israel over the years. There was a fear that he will have to answer to the position of the radicals or that people in his administration will pull him to do so, but he has not. He is good at charting the waters and not getting pulled to places he doesn't want to go.

I think that the little political options that there are on this issue is orchestrated from Above so that we can focus on Jewish Unity and to prune away infighting between any of the groups. Infighting is always to our detriment and makes us weak in spirit and weak to enemies from the outside.

May G-d continue to protect this country and the Land of Israel. May peace spring forth in the entire world very soon!!
