Mamakating highway super. faces felony charges

GOSHEN — The New York State Police announced this week that Town of Mamakating Highway Superintendent and Summitville Fire Chief Robert Hufcut stands accused in Orange County of sexually abusing a child.

According to police records, the alleged abuse occurred more 20 years ago between 2000 and 2001.

According to the New York State Police, Hufcut was arrested on Tuesday, May 31,  and was arraigned in Orange County Court before being  remanded to Orange County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail or $150,000 bond.

Hufcut, 55, is charged with Predatory Sexual Assault Against a Child and Course of Sexual Conduct Against a Child. After months of investigation by the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations, the case was presented to an Orange County Grand Jury who voted to indict Hufcut on those charges, both of which are felonies.

Hufcut is well-known throughout the community in Mamakating as Highway Superintendent and a fire chief. It’s unclear as of presstime how these charges will affect Hufcut’s positions.

It is reported that Town Supervisor Mike Robbins and the Mamakating Town Board are discussing Hufcut’s job with the town attorney. The Summitville Fire Department has not released a statement as of Wednesday, June 1 and could not immediately be reached for comment.

Hufcut is expected back in court next week.
