BETHEL — In front of a standing-room only crowd, Town of Liberty native Matt McPhillips declared his candidacy for District 1 Legislator on May 4 at Sorella’s Restaurant in the Town of Bethel. The announcement launched his campaign for the district, including the Town of Bethel, Town of Highland, Village of Jeffersonville, and parts of the Towns of Thompson, and Liberty.

McPhillips said, “I’m running for District 1 legislator because I believe we can be a model for the rest of the state where a shared vision leads to a bright and prosperous future.” His campaign platform focuses on affordable housing, improved health care, the environment, economic development, and transparency and civility in county government.

McPhillips was born and raised in Liberty. He is a graduate of Liberty High School and the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University. Currently, he serves as Legislative Liaison for Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther. He has worked cooperatively across the aisle for Congressman Faso and Senator Gillibrand.

Matt and his wife Vanessa are building a home in Bethel. Vanessa is the Director of Economic Development and Strategic Planning at the Sullivan County Partnership for Economic Development.

County Democratic Committee Chair Anne Hart said, “Matt is a capable and intelligent person whose experience shows that he knows how government is supposed to work. He cares deeply about the community and is committed to working for a better future for all our residents.”
