Matthew Anthony Monroe passed away on Monday, April 24, 2023 at his home in Monticello after a long battle with cancer.  He was 50.

The son of Mary Repko Monroe and the late William P. Monroe, he was born August 24, 1972 in Monticello. Matt graduated from Monticello High School. He went on to attend college at Sullivan County Community College with a degree in liberal arts. Matt was a jack of all trades and always willing to lend a hand. There was never a job too big or too small that he wasn’t willing to tackle. Matt worked in the Audio-Visual industry. His many jobs in this industry allowed him to travel the world. Matt did many things that most never get to do in a lifetime. His passion was his Harley. He would always want to go for a ride. Matt was one of a kind. Always the life of the party. Though he was diagnosed with cancer over 6 years ago, he never let that stop him from doing the things he loved. He was a true fighter till the very end. He always looked at the positive and never let cancer define him. He will be truly missed and remembered by the many lives he touched. His family hopes he is riding his dream Harley through the pearly gates of heaven and joining all those who passed before him. Matt, everyone you left in this world hates that you are gone, but we are happy that you are going home free and painless. We will always love and miss you until we can meet again.

He is survived by his mother: Mary A. Monroe; his siblings: Albert Monroe (Susan), Josephine Ketcham (Litt), Robert Monroe (Lynn), and his twin Brian Monroe (Wanda); nieces and nephews: Melinda (Josh), Shane (Mandi), Christopher (Erin), Craig (Julie), Holly, Paul, Ryan and Dylan; and a special friend Julie Hulse and her children, Tyler, Sam and Becky.  In addition to his father, William, he was predeceased by a brother: Michael (Susan).

Visitation will be held on Friday, April 28 from 3:00 to 6:00pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 401 Broadway in Monticello, with a funeral service starting at 5:30pm. Cremation will follow the services and interment of his ashes will be held at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Monticello at a later date.
