Monticello observes Veterans Day

Posted

Veterans and their families gathered with friends and neighbors at the Sullivan County Government Center in Monticello on Friday morning to recognize all veterans who have served their country.

Host Bill Kapito welcomed all those in attendance. Sullivan County Veterans Service Agency Director Stephen Walsh led those assembled in the Pledge of Allegiance. Father Ivan Csete said everyone is grateful to be healthy and able to attend the service honoring those who’ve served in uniform.  Lori-Orestano James led a rendition of the Star Spangled Banner and concluded the ceremony by singing God Bless America.

Veterans organizations in attendance included Sullivan County Veterans Coalition, American Legion Post 973, Jewish War Veterans Post 206, VFW Post 958, Amvets Post 58 and Rolling Thunder.

The morning’s keynote speaker was Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther.

“I don’t think it’s really possible to fully appreciate the sacrifices that veterans make each day,” Gunther said.  “We have to make sure that everyone has access to peer support and mental health service when they need it.”
