Monticello outpaces Sullivan West in opening game

Posted

ROSCOE – As was the case a year ago, the Sullivan West Bulldogs found themselves up against the Monticello Panthers. Not only was this a game that pitted the Class C Westies against the Class A Montis, it was once again an encounter that showed the relative skill and athleticism which propelled Monticello to the lopsided 62-28 win.

The difference in style featured the Bulldogs’ preference for a half-court more deliberate style of offense versus the Panthers’ rapid transition game that feeds off steals, outlet passes and quick run outs that often pay off with easy layups at the opposite end of the floor.

The Montis wasted no time in establishing a 21-6 first quarter lead that increased to 33-13 by the break. Sullivan West scored in the single digits again in the third quarter, netting only five points to Monticello’s 14.

The result was a 47-18 lead heading into the final stanza. Monticello capped off the game with a 15-point fourth quarter as Sullivan West got into double digits with 10. Monti senior Joseph Russo led all scorers with 16 points. Xavean Mitchell had 13 and Dylan Hardy posted nine. Jakob Halloran led Sullivan West with six. Monticello improved to 3-6. Sullivan West currently has the same record.
