More about the UMC movement

To the editor:

I originally paid light attention to the “Here and There” column of May 17 that reported on the recent schism between the United Methodist Church (UMC) and the breakaway movement, the Global Methodist Church (GMC).  After scanning the article further down, columnist Ed Townsend quotes from a former elder of the UMC who expressed dismay over the “theological liberalism” of the UMC.

Those words prompted me to search out the GMC on-line where I learned that their main reason for leaving is the UMC’s more tolerant stances over gay marriage, LGBTQ rights, and transgender rights.  Although the new group claims to be less inclined politically,  I’m certain that many within the group will find a comfortable niche within the corrupt, greed-mongering, violence-prone, insurrectionist, anti-democracy Republican Party.  Note:  Although the measure passed, 192 GOP House members recently voted against the Biden Administration’s life-saving proposal to widen and speed-up deliveries of baby formulas for mothers enrolled in the federal WIC program (Mothers, Infants and Children).

It’s clear as to why Townsend chose to write about the UMC/GMC rift, given his oft-stated backings of far-right causes and persons.
