No ban on whipped cream?

Posted

There is no need to show an ID when buying whipped cream in New York.

This is good news for whipped cream lovers after confusion spread across the state in the Capitol Region when stores posted signs announcing that customers needed to be 21 or older to buy whipped cream canisters.

A report by Samantha House on NewYorkUpstate.com said that stores cited a new state law that aims to make it harder for teenagers to use nitrous oxide – or “whippits” – to get high by putting age restrictions on whipped cream chargers.

The same article included a statement by Senator Joseph Addabbo Jr. of Queens who said that “the law is meant to prevent people under 21 from buying the small, individual nitrous oxide charges used to recharge whipped cream canisters, not the whipped cream you can buy at grocery stores.”

Senator Addabbo made clear that he, “never meant to prevent people from buying whipped cream.”

The Queens Senator told The New York Times, “We did not
ban the sale of whipped cream... let’s be reasonable... why would we do that.”

The stores announcing that age restriction and asking customers buying canned whipped cream to show an ID apparently were treating the dessert topping like alcohol or tobacco.

NewYorkUpstate.com reports that law banning people under 21 from buying nitrous oxide charges was passed in New York last year. The chargers, which are meant for reusable whipped cream dispensers, contain a euphoric high and can have serious health consequences, including brain damage, heart attacks and death.

Furthermore, Adabbo said, “The law was never meant to block young people or people without ID from buying whipped cream.”

So sweet-toothed New Yorkers have no fear, no license is needed to buy canned whipped cream at grocery stores.
