To the editor:

Change is difficult for those that don’t prepare. In the early 1970s we learned that oil will not be in large supply forever.

We also learned that the emissions are not good. Jump ahead fifty years and we are relearning the same.

We are screwed since we did not research and develop non-carbon sources of energy last century. No wonder wind and solar production is so deficient.

Don’t blame your parents or grandparents. They had a difficult time adjusting to the gasoline price increase from 35 cents to 55 cents per gallon. Rather than sticking to more efficient automobiles and alternative power sources, we needed our muscle cars and big trucks so learned to get more oil, whether by fracking or drilling in sensitive areas.

For those who want more oil, your selfishness will increase your comfort and doom your descendants. I am afraid it is too late. People will suffer. The higher gasoline prices will force you to carpool, use mass transportation and/or buy more efficient or EV vehicles.

We are starting too late. Fusion power will not be here in time to be our savior. Not all of us will survive the energy shortage fallout whether directly by not having enough or being affected by the consequences of global warming and food shortages.
