Pandemic increased record stays at state campgrounds

Posted

Record breaking number of stays at New York State Campgrounds in 2021 climbed to record highs this year as visitors embraced safe, healthy and affordable recreation during the Covid-19 pandemic.

We visited this past summer the Little Pond Campground and Day Use Area and talked to numerous campers enjoying the many activities offered by Little Pond. Folks expressed how much they enjoyed themselves at these facilities.

Employees at Little Pond also said they were surprised by the number of campers this summer compared to other years but strongly pointed out that the campground facilities certainly offered a safer and healthy approach to camper’s recreational needs.

A state press release noted that overnight stays in State Campgrounds were up more than 10 percent from a previous 2016 record.

Campsites, cabins, and cottages saw occupancy’s totaling 1.2 million nights and overnight reservations at campgrounds for State Parks climbed to record highs this year.

These increased figures of occupancy do show how much campers appreciate New York State campgrounds and how important these facilities are.

Of course the pandemic made outdoor recreation a better way to go and the added campers to our Sullivan County campgrounds certainly helped the local coffers.
